Someone recently asked for information/statistics about STDs in our area. The Department of Health website provides current statistics on most of the reported sexually transmitted diseases for the whole state in an easy to use Excel document· The Bureau of HIV also provides a monthly surveillance report with the number of persons reported for many sexually transmitted diseases including HIV and Hepatitis. I hope this information is helpful to all. Thank you for your questions. http://www.doh.state.fl.us/disease_ctrl/std/trends/florida.html
Just a thought that I wanted to share about testing, it is recommended that everyone be tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases as part of an annual checkup. If you have not been tested before, consider making an appointment. It is free and could save your life!
How long does it take to get tested for stds? The office visit may take an hour, rarely does it take longer.
Does it hurt? We do draw blood and that may be a little pinch. For female patients you may have a pelvic exam and that also may be uncomfortable but should not hurt. Whats the testing like, as in what to you take blood and with what? We test blood routinely for HIV and syphilis. For patients over 18 we can also test for Hepatitis A, B and C. We do a urine test for gonorrhea and chlamydia (so don't use the bathroom within an hour of your appointment). Depending on if you have symptoms we may also test for herpes with a blood test or culture.
What time are you open till for teens to get tested? Our general clinic hours vary from one site to the other and appointments are preferred. Some clinics open as early as 7 am and close at 6 pm. I suggest calling for an appointment.
Will you tell My parents? No we do not have to tell your parents. Not to say that you should not consider talking to them but we understand sometimes that is not in the best interest of the patient. This is confidential and we will not tell anyone anything without your permission.
How soon will i know the results? HIV results are availabe within 10 minutes because we have rapid testing available. Other test results take one to two weeks and you will be allowed to call for those test results.
Q: I was told that there was different website's for the state of Florida that shows a list of people who had to resister with this state that have aids do you know anything about that
A: While we are aware of people known to have HIV/AIDS, the information is not on a website to keep it confidential.
Q: Hi, Wanted to know if I could ask you other questionS that isn't about STD?
A: Sure I'm a nurse and will try to answer your other questions. If I don't have an answer I may be able to point you in the right direction to get one.
Our first question comes from a person who asks "How do you know if you have AIDS or something?" Well the answer is that in order to find out if you have AIDS or something you need to be tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. You can do that at your local health department. Thanks for asking.
