May 11th, ‘08 was a great evening for Vancouver’s Thundering Word. We were delighted to have a special guest feature at our great venue, all the way from Australia, Mr. CJ Smith.
It was a lot of work, yet proved to be well worth it! We were prepared to hear a great Bluesman perform and that we did, but what he added to his solo show was above and beyond our highest expectations. We were treated to a total surprise in that he not only did some wonderful and original Blues songs as anticipated, but he also included ballads and love songs.
He held the audience’s attention all night. No one left as it grew late. No one made any sounds while he performed. Rapt attention was what he deserved and what he got. This was by far one of our best features in our long and proud history!

CJ Smith has just returned from a solo tour of Canada, where he performed a mix of old songs and new songs from the album.
As a performer, CJ Smith brings a rare talent as a lyricist/storyteller to an eclectic grouping of material that includes love songs, ballads, blues, protest songs, serious folk songs, adult contemporary and the occasional lighthearted look at life. His voice ranges at will from Don Henley high through a kind of Elmore James, Lightning Hopkins style to a gravelly Tom Waits low.
The response to blues numbers on his last album, and the amount of radio airplay they are attracting around the world, including traditional blues hot spots like New Orleans has prompted Smith to sit down and write a series of songs for a new original blues album. He has endeavoured to keep the studio sessions as lo-fi and live as possible and to write the sort of material that working musicians like to play when they get together to relax and jam. The result is a RED HOT grouping of songs that includes a little bit of delta, a couple of traditional blues tracks, a couple of blues rock tracks and one very introspective slow blues ballad track titled Suburbia, which is a rework of song he wrote 2 or 3 years back.
The single "OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT" is receiving great airplay, and the early reviews on the new album have been outstanding.
"COLD OUTSIDE" was a showcase of new, original material covering a number of different genres including acoustic folk, rock, ballad, blues and blues rock. Two tracks from the album made it into the finals of the Australian Songwriters Association awards, with the title track, Cold Outside, making the grand final.
