'Just love those Acapella harmonies! Jazz, reggae, folk and blues improvisation and singing rounds, or cyclical gamelan music! Natural rhythms and the poetry of blending language and music is the major influence. Music is a language of sharing. So step into the Heart of Love and sing within the winds of time' CG. I think that Jalaluddin Rumi's words influence me most:
" Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray".
How I made my profile: I used Dave & Jay's amazing myspace editor.Claire Gurry is a singer songwriter, poet, guitar teacher, global education resource writer and qualified teacher. She was raised in Adelaide, but by parents who are both from country towns. Claire has a life long joy of musical expression. Singing harmonies, jamming with her family and friends and exposure to blues, folk, gospel, jazz, classical and alternative music styles have been a long standing tradition. Her brother Paul Gurry is a local musician / DJ too.
Claire loves many different styles, being attracted overall by the lyrics and songs of individual musicians and bands rather than one particular genre of music. She is inspired by the mystic and romantic poets ( Rumi, Gibran, Shelley...) and poetic singer song writers including Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Billy Bragg, Bob Marley, KD Lang, as well as the UK band James amongst many others. She admires a great many locally based and Australian singer song writers, including The Heather Frahn Trio, Raw Honey, Cal Williams Jr, RedHead, Robyn Habel and the Borderers just to name a few! She has also studied Indonesian music and language, lived in Indonesia and has played in a gamelan orchestra.
Claire has been singing in local acapella choirs since 2004. She sings with ALLEGRIA women's acapella choir now, sister choir to Women with Latitude acapella choir. (ever heard a choir version of 'Raw Hide'? It's fun and joyful!). Claire began writing her own songs again on her old acoustic guitar after a long long break (raising kids!!). She has since bought herself an acoustic electric guitar and joined SCALA ( Songwriters Composers and Lyricists Association of South Australia). Claire has won awards for her songs in 2007, 2008 & 2998 which has certainly inspired her to keep singing and writing!
Claire has been performing at The Joiner’s Arms and Burnside library (for SCALA), conferences, fetes, HER SPACE nights at Halifax Cafe, private events, schools and parties, fund raisers and rallies, Feast, Sing Out!, Higher Ground Cafe, live on Radio Adelaide (101.5 fm) including the Radio Adelaide Live Music Fest 2009 (see their website for more of Claire's songs played live on Aqueerium), with friends and with the acapella choir.
CONTACT Claire via email about playing at an event, or singing harmonies. Claire also performs popular children's songs and sing-alongs for children's parties / schools. Her children, friends and life experiences provide her with plenty of song writing ideas and a great joy of singing and playing music!! Studio recordings of these and her other songs? That's pending for 2009/10, so come along to a live gig...!! Always open to ideas for starting / joining a band, singing harmonies, collaboration on songs, or general feedback! Claire teaches guitar locally with the Cal Williams Jr Guitar School Method. Send Claire a My Space email (Claire Gurry) or message, find her at the monthly SCALA workshops (or contact her via email at Shivakaligirl@yahoo.com.au ) "The Triquetra image is a favourite ancient symbol of mine. For me this triquetra within a circle signifies universal interconnection and the strength of Unity in Diversity. Expressing Everything and Nothing: All One" CG.
