« Among all groups which animated the French Cold Wave and Industrial scene of the 80s, Clair Obscur is certainly one of those which radiated furthest outside the boundaries of France. Several of their records have been published by British labels like All the Madmen (the live The Pilgrim’s Progress, 1986) or Cathexis Recordings (the 12" single Smurf in the Gulag, the same year), and one of their act of glory is to be part of the compilation From Torture To Conscience of the mythical label N.E.R. alongside with Current 93, In The Nursery or Death In June (1984). From Killing Joke to The Nits, from Le Cirque d’Hiver de Paris (1982) to the Wiener Festwochen (1991), the bands with which they played, and the venues and places that they performed are a fantastic testimony to the richness of this group which is so difficult to classify. Founded in Creil in 1981 by Thierry Damerval (bass guitar), Christophe (vocals) et Nicolas Demarthe (guitar), Clair Obscur drew immediately attention with a home made audio tape (re-released on the album Play), a 7" single magnificently designed (Santa Maria) and several 12" singles. From the most tribal cold wave to chamber music, from industrial music to dance music (unless these two are synonymous), their musical approach is eminently atmospheric and embraces a surprising variety of styles, giving birth to iconoclastic scenic transcriptions. By recreating a domestic place on stage or by organizing a fake TV game, Clair Obscur explore universes close to theatre or performance, which can be found in In Out, published in 1988 on V.I.S.A. with the help of France Culture. After the releases of the albums Sans titre, 1992, Rock (1994) and Nulle Aide… (recorded under the name CO2, for "Clair Obscur 2nd Generation", in 1999), the end of the 90s saw the group hibernate. Christophe Demarthe mainly worked on his project Cocoon, an ambitious multimedia work released on Optical Sound. Since March 2004, Clair Obscur has been reactivated by Nicolas and Christophe Demarthe, and their albums Play and In Out (...) re-released by the label Infrastition. »

« De toutes les formations qui animèrent la scène cold wave et industrielle française des années 1980, Clair Obscur est certainement l’une de celles dont le rayonnement fut le plus vif au-delà des frontières de l’Hexagone. Plusieurs de ses disques ont été publiés par des labels britanniques tels que All The Madmen (le live The Pilgrim’s Progress, 1986) ou Cathexis (le maxi Smurf in the Gulag, la même année), et l’un de ses titres de gloire est d’avoir figuré sur la compilation From Torture To Conscience du mythique label N.E.R., aux côtés de Current 93, In The Nursery ou Death In June (1984). De Killing Joke aux Nits, du Cirque d’Hiver (en 1982) aux Wiener Festwochen (1991), en passant par l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris ou le Théâtre Dejazet, les groupes avec lesquels il a partagé l’affiche et les lieux où il s’est produit disent bien la richesse de l’univers de ce groupe radicalement inclassable. Fondé à Creil en 1981 par Thierry Damerval (basse), Christophe (chant) et Nicolas Demarthe (guitare), Clair Obscur se fait très tôt remarquer avec une cassette autoproduite (rééditée sur l’album Play), un 45 tours superbement designé (Santa Maria) et une série de maxis. De la cold wave la plus tribale à la musique de chambre, de la musique industrielle à la musique de danse (à moins que les deux ne soient synonymes), sa démarche musicale, éminemment atmosphérique, embrasse une surprenante variété de styles et fait l’objet de transcriptions scéniques iconoclastes : en reconstituant sur scène un habitat domestique ou en organisant un simulacre de jeu télévisé, Clair Obscur explore des univers qui voisinent avec le théâtre
ou la performance, ce dont témoigne In Out, paru en 1988 chez V.I.S.A. avec l’aide de France Culture. Après la publication des albums Sans titre, 1992, Rock (1994) et Nulle aide… (enregistré sous le nom de CO2, pour “Clair Obscur 2nd Generation“, en 1999), la fin des années 90 voit le groupe mettre ses activités en veilleuse. Christophe Demarthe
se consacre notamment à son projet Cocoon, ambitieuse entreprise multimédia hébergée chez Optical Sound. Depuis mars 2004, Clair Obscur a toutefois été réactivé par Nicolas et Christophe Demarthe, et ses albums Play et In Out (...) réédités par le label Infrastition. »

And Also The Trees débute une tournée de dix concerts en France à la fin du mois d’octobre 2009 dont une soirée à Paris, au Café de la Danse, le 30 octobre. Où que vous habitiez, le groupe passe forcément près de chez vous. Réservez vos places !
Suite au succès de sa tournée européenne de juin dernier, And Also The Trees est déjà de retour en France pour dix nouvelles dates.
Groupe culte de la période post-punk au même titre que Joy Division et produit par Robert Smith, And Also The Trees sortait au printemps dernier un nouvel album, When the Rains Come. Un très beau disque acoustique qui revisite le répertoire du groupe anglais et dont Les Inrockuptibles ont écrit qu’il s’agissait là du "meilleur album des Tindersticks, haut la main."
Recentrés pour l'occasion autour de Simon Huw Jones au chant, Justin Jones à la guitare acoustique, Ian Jenkins à la contrebasse et Emer Brizzolara au dulcimer, And Also The Trees dévoilera lors de cette série de concerts un nouvel EP vinyle en édition strictement limitée à paraître avant le début de l’hiver chez Les Disques du 7ème Ciel.
