Biog: Born January 1983, raised in Osaka Japan by a Scottish mother and a Japanese father. Clara and her 2 younger siblings had a very cross-cultured and unique upbringing. Her grandparents, who originate from Okinawa, surrounded Clara with their tropical island’s traditional music and culture, whilst her Jazz-loving father exposed her to a lot of Jazz from an early age. In contrast, Clara also enjoyed her mother’s taste in music, which included The Beatles, Carpenters, Carole King and Joni Mitchell.
Clara settled in Scotland for the latter part of her schooling, and then moved on to study Jazz music at university in London. After graduating, she became a vocal coach, piano teacher and choir director, as well as actively pursuing her own musical career as a singer-songwriter, performing both solo and with her band.
In 2008, she became eager to find a new musical direction, as she no longer felt comfortable pursuing a mainstream commercial sound. She also started looking for another musical instrument that she could take up, to find new inspiration and to reignite her passion for music. After some experimentation, in February 2008, she came across the Ukulele, which she immediately fell in love with and has now become her trademark. She has created her own unique style, developed from blending her understanding of her cultural strands.
In May 2008, she posted some home-made videos on YouTube, and to her surprise, she had a huge response and gained massive attention. Two of her videos were featured on the YouTube homepage on separate occasions, one of which received over half a million views from people all over the world and the views are still increasing by the day.
As her fan base grew, she was getting many requests to release a CD of her work, and as a result she spent the whole of summer 2008 recording her first album ‘oh well’.
Autumn and spring are my favorite times of the cycle of life, there is for me a soft bitter sweetness and sublime melancholic beauty in the falling autumn leaves...XXX.Lady Cheval
