The girl says the Source is a person and at the same time a mountain of water, vitreous as emerald. That she has no arms, no face, and cannot see; that she glides forward without moving so as not to disturb the folds of water she wears draped around her presence.
-Marguerite Duras
Clara Engel is a multi-faceted artist whose voice is guided by the likes of Jacques Brel, Robert Johnson, and Theodore Roethke. Engel is quickly gaining a following and carving a niche for herself as a brave, bold, and innovative new voice. Both fierce and delicate, her music is reminiscent of an era in history when theatre, art, and sound were an integral part of a bigger, more vital whole; an era that the 21st century is craving more than ever. Clara Engel’s music presents the sort of emotional tightrope that has fueled unforgettable artists like Antony Hegarty and Diamanda Galas. Gorgeous and beguiling, her androgynous voice rises from a whisper to a roar while maintaining miraculous tone and pitch. Engel performs live frequently in NYC and Toronto, and has a loyal European following. She is set to release her fifth album 'Secret Beasts' at the end of 2009, and will be touring in 2010.

-Tova G. Kardonne reviewing Aidan Baker's Liminoid
"i know you're a girl, but sometimes listening to your voice, i feel like i'm listening to a hundred voices, male and female, all erupting from your jaws, like you are the portal for all thought and fear, love and loss, and even though you are a girl, there is a sense of masculinity as well as pure femininity, nestling in your voice...a neutral sex for a neutral sound. a midway between dark and light. a river between a war and asylum..."
-Jacob (songwriter/composer)
Clara’s songs often explore the nether regions of the human heart. But they do it with compassion and insight, and a direct and deeply affecting musical vision.
-Tilman Lewis
