Known for his fierce and often sultry saxophone sound and astoundng virtuosity, Clarence Johnson III, born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, plunged into the straight-ahead/avant-garde jazz scene with his debut release “Dedicated to You” 1998, which received such descriptions as “Coltranesque Impressionism” and “Sun Ra Futurism.” Other recording higlights include Tori Amos ("Boys for Pele" WEA, 1996), where he was featured on “Muhammad My Friend.” He's also recorded with Bruce Hornsby as part of a tribute to Keith Jarret ("Long as you’re Living Yours” RCA, 2000). Currently, Clarence is completing material of contempory insirational jazz for his soon-to-be released EP, ("Yours Truly" Royal Street Records, 2009).
Along with his various bands, Clarence also currently works and records with Jenifer Holiday. Additionally, he has worked with orchestras performing with Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, Kirk Franklin, Gladys Knight, the O’Jays, and Billy Preston. His resume also includes past performances with Wynton Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis Quintet, Jimmy Smith, John Scofield, Medesiki-Martin-&Wood, Bill Summers, members of the Neville Brothers, Allen Toussaint, Dr.John, Zigaboo Modeliste (Meters), Dixie Cups, Irma Thomas, Marcia Ball, and the Tipitina’s Founder’s Band All-Stars.
Clarence made his big screen debut as a member of the Ray Charles Septet and the Ray Charles Orchestra performing on baritone saxophone alongside Oscar Award –winning actor Jamie Fox in the blockbuster movie RAY(Universal Pictures 2004). Participation in RAY later spawned the opportunity to collaborate closely with David “Fathead” Newman in a tribute concert celebrating the music of Ray Charles. Additionally, Clarence has appeared in television commercials for the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corp. with Emeril Lagasse, Community Coffee, and the New Orleans Contemporary Art Center.
Clarence also currently serves on the music faculty of Morehouse College as the Principal Woodwind Instructor, Symphonic Band Director, and professor. Additionally, he serves part-time on the music faculty of Spelman College.
