REVIEWS
"exuberantly entertaining tour de force"
"the ace in the hole is Sax, so assured as both writer and performer that he redefines charisma for a hip new age"
- VARIETY
"Sax is a prodigiously powerful writer"
"Sax is vulnerable, hip, smart and compelling, and he's being widely touted around town as headed for a major career"
"This is someone who understands the interconnectivity of language."
- CHICAGO TRIBUNE
"This is a show that appeals directly to the ears and the gut."
"Applaud Matt Sax"
"Suspend disbelief"
- LA TIMES
"A dazzling combination of hip hop poetry and singing, and impossibly eloquent, intense acting, all laid over the superstructure of a brilliantly fluid dramatic structure -- Matt Sax regales, pleads and entertains his audience."
"The tools Sax brings to his amazing presentation are a magnificent voice that ranges easily through many octaves both raucous and lyrical, a tool chest of sound effects, the clever use of microphones as characters themselves, a plastic face that would do justice to a jester and the usual hip-hop arsenal of stylized gestures."
- HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
"molten-intense wordsmithery"
"Clay is violent, sexually charged and often absurdly funny. But instead of being superficially so, Sax's story has genuine humanity."
- UR CHICAGO
"a riveting, exhilarating theatrical experience"
- FLAVORPILL
"breathtaking—the kind of single-stroke genius that literally moved me to tears not so much because of the poignancy behind it, but because of the sheer power of the artistry"
- WINDY CITY TIMES
"With his rubbery face, deft morphing into and out of multiple characters and ages, and feverish command of all aspects of the hip-hop style, Sax is clearly a master of the form."
- CHICAGO SUN TIMES
"Matt Sax is here."
- CENTERSTAGE.COM
"masterful one-man musical"
"Each character's voice, body language, and aura is precise. Indeed, Sax has the mimicry talents of superstars Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams."
- THEATERMANIA.COM
"Clay is the kind of phenomenon that dazzles you and whets your appetite."
- ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER
"For the first five minutes of “Clay” I took notes like a good reporter.
Then I just stopped. It became clear rather quickly that I was watching an extraordinary performance by any measure. I was only cheating myself each time I glanced at my notebook instead of watching Matt Sax."
- KANSAS CITY STAR
