Cletus McDuff's new album deeply rooted in Lake of the Ozarks hills

LAKE OF THE OZARKS - Just like the man behind the guitar, his music has evolved over the years.
It is a process even the artist himself can't explain other than to say he has a 'split personality.'
The faceless man covered up by a cowboy hat sitting in front of a microphone is symbolic. As the image portrayed on the cover of his latest CD, Cletus McDuff says its not about recognition ' performing is an honor.
'To me it's not about who I am. None of that is important to me. It's about the music, playing pure and simple.'
McDuff, whose real name is Dave Osment, was created several years ago following a traumatic time in his life. The lifelong musician said that is when he broke out as a performer and McDuff was born.
At first he played so many gigs, he had to soak his fingers in ice water for relief. Now he's built up a fan base, shared the stage with dozens of local bands and is ready to celebrate the release of his latest album, 'HillBilly RawkDawg.'
Over the years, the singer/songwriter's taste in music has changed.
'I play music how I know and understand it. My style is hybrid. Country, rock, blues, jazz and now bluegrass,' McDuff said. 'Each song doesn't have all those elements in it. Every song has its own life.'
While he's proud of his most recent accomplishment, McDuff is critical of his own work. Of the hundreds of songs he's written since he was a teenager, McDuff says 'maybe a dozen or so are good. I am self-taught, so I am still growing as a musician.'
Collaborating with McDuff on the new album, Robert Goode 'Estelle Thompson' helped incorporate stories passed down from his grandmother who lived at the Ha Ha Tonka General Store. In many cases, McDuff wrote the music while Goode inserted the words.
The title track, 'River Bottom Rock Stomp' was created while sitting on the back porch. It's a song about a hoedown and moonshine that was meant to bring a 'local flair' into the mix.
Even though his artistic abilities shine through on paper, Goode admits that about as good as it gets.
'I might play some washboard, but I don't really have any musical talents,' Goode said.
His ability to incorporate characteristics of the lake is what appealed to McDuff when working on tracks for the CD.
'Cletus was born down here at the lake, so I thought it was appropriate,' he said. 'It's not overprocessed by any means. It's not important to make it technically perfect. We interpret the songs our way.'
It took nearly two years to complete the record, which was recorded at his home studio. A CD release party will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 12 Chicago Brothers in Osage Beach
I am in the process of the final edits on my book/CD and will have it available for all soon, I will keep you posted on this site..............The songs on this site will be on the CD and currently represent the style of music I perform on stage...............I have performed at numerous venues around the Mid-West through out the years.
