Clifford Borg was born into a musical family on May 11, 1976. By the age of five, he had already started to take piano lessons and within the year, he had joined his two sisters in his father’s band, entertaining patrons at their family restaurant. The positive reception prompted them to form The Islanders, performing regularly at various Maltese hotels and clubs. At the age of 10, Clifford was asked to give a live solo performance on Malta’s national television station, playing a repertoire that included Fur Elise, Moonlight Sonata and Ballad pour Adeline. A year later he was again on television, this time with The Islanders.
Clifford immersed himself in music, obtaining a diploma in piano practical and theory (ALCM) at an early age. This was also the time he decided to try his hand at composing. The song Longing Dawn, which placed 7th in Malta..s most prestigious song festival, was the culmination of his work between 1995 and 1997, during which time Clifford was also the keyboard player with the band Orion. When the band dissolved, Clifford decided to focus more on composition, and in March 2000, he released his debut album Drifted. The solo piano album featured twelve piano-based tracks composed and performed by Clifford himself. In the meantime, he also collaborated with local singer Chiara and other artists. One of the numbers off the album, Hoping was later remixed as an ambient dance track and was the third most played and requested track by local artists on Capital Radio.
Clifford has also given a number of concerts in Malta and abroad, namely in the United Kingdom, Holland, Belgium, Germany, France and Egypt. His performances have been well-received by audiences and critics alike. More recently, Clifford launched his second album Origin in November 2008 with live performances in Brussels and Paris. He is currently working on his third album, which is based on a cross-over of different musical genres.
What is striking about Borg is how he manages to roll so many influences and make them his own. Eric Montfort Music Critic, Times of Malta........................
“One hopes that we will hear more of Clifford Borg, and that he will not be afraid to take risks and experiment with new compositional techniques. In the meantime, he is providing Maltese audiences with some enjoyable “chill-out “piano music sounds”. Joseph Camilleri, Music Critic, Times of Malta...............................
With this experience in hand, and the promising work on Drifted, Clifford Borg's potential is obvious, and his live performances which included some jazz and classical standards, are recommended to any genuine music lover.
Drifted is a true example that good, passionate music does not need cosmetic facelifts to make its point, and the 12 stripped-down songs here are proof of this! Micheal Bugeja: Music Critic Malta Independent.
