John Lennon, Patti Smith, Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Bjork, CocoRosie, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Ladytron, T.Rex, Fiona Apple, Nine Inch Nails, Hole, The Raincoats, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Janis Joplin, M.I.A., The Pretenders, Roy Orbison
The heavy stuff: Distorted electro-grunge & angsty acoustic punk. Ladytron meets PJ Harvey. An electronic version of Hole. A female echo of Nine Inch Nails. Nirvana dropped in a vat of M.I.A.'s beats.
The light stuff: Aimee Mann, CocoRosie, Lucinda Williams
"Antifolk's own Joan Jett, [who] rocks harder than pretty much anyone she shares a bill with." - The Deli Magazine
Born south of the Mason-Dixon line, Somer Bingham migrated north in the late nineties, in part to seek fame and fortune, but mostly to skip college classes at Princeton. Four years ago, she had her heart ripped out, stepped on, and dredged through some high-quality (but very acidic) vinegar. This gave her all the inspiration she needed to decide to devote her life to music completely. Maybe it was to give voice to her heartache. Maybe it was to give herself a sense of purpose. Most likely, it was to make her ex jealous.
Whatever the reason, it worked.
The Aquarian calls her "A tomboy guitarist with half sultry, half screaming vocals... Her voice in its sultry tone sounds like PJ Harvey and yet her screaming is like Trent Reznor’s (if he was a woman anyway)."
Urban Folk's cover feature claims, "this petite but powerful "electro-grunge" rocker with her sultry singing voice and tough exterior is way more than meets the eye... Her eclectic style is ever-evolving and if you start following her now, you'll be lucky enough to take the journey with her."
While developing her sound as a solo artist, she played all over the city at venues like The Sidewalk Cafe, Rockwood Music Hall, The Delancey, The Slipper Room, and in music festivals like the Anti*Pop Music Fest (Orlando), Phasefest (D.C.), The Antifolk Festival in the East Village, M.E.A.N.Y. Fest, and the Hyperactive Festival in Albuquerque, NM. In the fall of 2007 she toured France & Germany with The X-Tra Pleasure Burning Band, a garage rock band based in Annecy, France.
Now playing under the name Clinical Trials with Dan LeMunyan on drums, AJ Annunziata on bass, and Eric Olson on synths & guitar, the live show takes the electro-grunge sound of the recorded tracks and adds so much energy, it's tough to resist the temptation to get up and dance.
The self-released debut Clinical Trials EP is due out in fall 2009.
