A quick note about KCR radio from SDSU and internet streaming... It's currently NOT happening. Unfortunately, due to some non-compliance issues surrounding the regulations of internet streaming, our world-wide-web plug has been temporarily pulled. The problem is mainly, but not completely, the fact that we have not been providing you, the listening audience, with the visual information of the ARTIST, SONG TITLE and CD/ALBUM TITLE on your computer monitor as the song is being played. If you listen to such stations as AOL Radio, you’ll see that info on the screen and you’ll know what I’m talking about. True, the vast majority of college radio stations also do not provide this feature and are still broadcasting, we have been told in no uncertain terms that if we do not comply with said requirements that your quaint, low budget college radio station will be issued a fine so large that SDSU would bring KCR’s 40 year existence to an immediate end.
So, KCR needs new hardware and software to bring us up to speed. The problem IS being worked on, but due to our non-existent budget, it has become the project of volunteers who work at their own pace. Be cool… we will be back… someday.
About me: In a world long since gone, I grew up in an orange grove and dairy cattle suburb of L.A. known as Downey, California. As a wee lad, my friend's brothers were pretty hip and we'd dig the tunes of the hottest new craze, surfing. Bands like The Chantays, Dick Dale and his Del-tones, The Beach Boys, The Belairs would stack the multi-level record player and life was good in baby-boom So-Cal. The Brits invaded and my musical tastes, along with the rest of the world turned to music void of reverb except for the likes of Iron Butterfly, etc. Many years passed and I'd listen to K-Earth waiting for the rare playing of some old surf / summer tune I loved so much.
Fast Forward to 1995 (I think it was), hanging out in a Guide-Dog puppy raising booth at the local Del Mar fair, off in the distance I could hear music... surf music! By the time I made it to the stage, the gig was done. But I chatted with Rick of "Surf Report" and to my delight, discovered that surf music was alive!! Shortly thereafter, I just happened to come across "Nomad" by the Aqua Velvets in a Borders Books listening station as I waiting for the Mrs. to browse the entire store for her next favorite book (jk Mrs. B.). The rest is history except for the fact that long time friend and local college DJ, Joe Shrin, was able to get me a gig at KCR radio at the home of my alma mater, San Diego State U.
My life has been transformed into the world of surf music. The benefits of being CB is getting to hear tons of great music from bands from around the world. Who would have thunk I’d become good friends with musicians from Slovenia or Israel or Brazil? Then to have the best bands in the genre come to the tiny KCR studio and play live! To quote Jim the Poet; “I love the friends I have gathered together on this thin raft; we have constructed pyramids in honor of our escaping.” Not sure why I mentioned that, just sounds cool.
I want to thank Mrs. B, Joe, KCR and every surf band in the world for making life so fun!
