Cliquant came about when Arran and Alex, (who had met each other at Leeds College of Music that year), were gratifying their desire for Guinness in leeds late in 2007. After watching a great band at the Adelphi, drinking and generally complaining about the lack of original sounds in the modern music mainstream, they thus decided to form a new band with a folky edge, noting that "folk is sick and folk artists are badmen."
They then contacted Maccie and asked him if he wanted to play drums in an original experience and explained the concept to him. He said "Cool".
Andy was next enlisted because of his widely-recognised talent as an amazing violinist and and for his long-standing reputation as an enthusiastic and vibrant person. Arran and Maccie had been in a band with him at school and still held him in high regard, especially on the rum consumption front.
Ben, Steph and Mr Swifty were added over a period of several months to form the much needed high-end of the band- their Trumpet, Flute and Sax combining brilliantly to provide a new and energetic dimension to the somewhat maudlin sounds which the band had started to produce.
The search for a female vocalist to complement the Morrison-esque baritone of Arran was a long one, eventually culminating in the recent addition of the talented singer-songwriter-guitarist Oui Bee, who, in the eyes of fans, has fitted into the group like the proverbial "missing piece" of the jigsaw!
All in all, Cliquant are glad to be playing together with like-minded musicians and are enjoying creating new sounds, pieced together as a collective of their individual, varying and always interesting tastes. They are currently making an E.P, playing shows and ultimately looking to progress within the vibrant Yorkshire music scene.
Looking forward to seeing you at a gig soon, if not before!
