CLUB PONDEROSA HAS CLOSED!

After four months of live music, theatre, performances, workshops, dj events, demonstrations, festivals, discussions and socialising ... on the 28th June, 2009, we packed our bags and the MASS sound-system, bid farewell to Camden and the space we occupied at 176, and disappeared into a hazy London sunset.

For more information about Club Ponderosa and some of the events that it initiated and hosted, see 'About Club Ponderosa' ...

This site now functions as an archive for a small proportion of the documentation taken during the clubs existence, illustrating the collaborations with, and participation of the people and groups involved in over 30 of the events that took place. See below for a visual taster of our time at 176 and a full credit list!

   About Club Ponderosa

Club Ponderosa was established by Matt Stokes during an artist's residency at 176, a gallery located in Chalk Farm/Kentish Town, London. The impressive building that houses the gallery was formerly a Methodist Chapel, built in 1867, and once home to the infamous London Drama Centre. Drawing from this history, the club occupied the rear exhibition space (which was often used by the chapel and LDC for public performances), and operated as part meeting house, nightclub, theatre, village hall and social club. It opened its doors on the 22nd February 2009.

The aim of Club Ponderosa was to create an informal and flexible social-space that would foster new encounters between groups, and act as a catalyst for the creation of events designed and programmed in collaboration with people living or working in the Camden area. Use of the space and entry was free, and events had a non-commercial emphasis. Participants included non-profit theatre groups, musicians and bands, ecological and historical societies, informal collectives, craftspeople, fashion designers and artists … and many more.

In the two weeks prior to Club Ponderosa opening, the bare bones of the space were made: a bar, meeting table, seating, simple lighting and banners bearing the clubs insignia. Over the four month lifespan of the club, the environment evolved as objects and traces of the events it hosted left their mark.

The programming of events was an equally organic process. The schedule started at a sedate pace, but as people discovered Club Ponderosa, the space became busier and the range of events more diverse and surprising.

Club Ponderosa was also home to MASS, a sound system fabricated from donated parts and online speaker designs, which was pivotal to the functioning of the club. (See below for more information about MASS).

The club closed on the 27th June 2009, and this site, which publicised events during its existence, now acts as a record of what took place. (The archiving process is in-progress, so keep checking for updates!)

Club Ponderosa was located at:

176 Prince of Wales Road
London
NW5 3PT

Underground: Chalk Farm, Northern Line Station: 5 minute walk

MASS Soundsystem:

The MASS sound system played an essential role in Club Ponderosa. It is a DIY system, made of donated components and home-built cabs constructed using free online designs. MASS grew (albeit very slowly!) throughout the lifespan of Club Ponderosa ... and has amassed donations of parts, which will now allow the system to expand. Although Club Ponderosa has closed, MASS will continue to be worked on, and is still seeking components, so do get in touch via this site if you have any spare parts that might be useful! Once the system is large enough, it will be used for free events that uphold the Club Ponderosa ethos.

A big thanks go to Dan and Crofton from the i-ality hifi sound system, John Paice at Celestion, Nigel Comrie at Wigwam Acoustics, Britannia Row Productions, Tom Richards ... and all those who have contributed to the Real Arcadia sound system, which has added sound-support for MASS whilst it is in progress.

CLUB PONDEROSA CLOSING PARTY!
SUN 28TH JUNE, 2-9PM

Although Club Ponderosa was conceived as a temporary social-space, it was still with much sadness that it closed its doors for the last time ... But, we didn't go quietly and without a good knees-up!

The day kicked-off at 2pm with drinks, food and an informal round-table discussion with some of the people and groups involved in Club Ponderosa. Then from 4pm, we turned the heat up (literally as it was roasting hot in the club!) with live music and Dj sets from a host of folk who had previously graced the stage, including the likes of: Milly Blue (oh, what a voice!), Dogtanian, The Camden Ceileh Band, Visitor Q, and Djs Tom Richards and Crofton Black.

For old times sake, fresh bread and scones were once again baked in the club ... and the 'potluck' cake table kept everyone's stomachs content. As the evening wore on, the drinks flowed and (despite the heat!) there was dancing to be done, as A.Human played out the night with a truly fantastic set ... and a perfect finale to say ... ADIOS CLUB PONDEROSA!

LONDON UNDERGROUND COMICS WEEKEND
SAT 27TH JUNE, 11AM-9PM

London Underground Comics in partnership with Club Ponderosa presented a packed one-day festival featuring over 40 of the UK’s finest small press talents. The club was alive throughout the day with crowds browsing stalls that offered the chance to buy comics and original comic art, whilst there was drawing, animation screenings and Djs throughout the day. (It should be said that many people were recovering their costs through sales!)

About London Underground Comics: LUC was established in 2007 by Oli Smith, who sought a team of comic creators and self-publishers to help him man a weekly market stall in Camden Lock Market. Starting with five creators, the stall attracted the attention of around 60 fellow small pressers, and LUC soon went on to hold two comic festivals in the center of Camden Market. The Camden Stall was closed at Christmas 2008 as they explored new avenues of raising awareness of small press.

If I walk through this door will I find heaven?
THURS 25TH JUNE, 8PM, &
FRI 26TH JUNE, 8PM

Aorta Theatre, founded in 2005, is an evolving group of artists collaborating on a variety of projects.

'If I walk through this door will I find heaven?' was a unique performance developed over two and a half months through intensive 'responses' to 176 Prince of Wales road. The piece was performed by actors from the former London Drama Centre that once occupied 176, and recent students of the Centre’s new incarnation based at Central Saint Martin’s College.
The piece took the form of a promenade theatre walk inspired by the power of the building that houses Club Ponderosa - fusing the performers reactions to 176, memories and mythologies about the place as it was and is now, as well as their personal histories. Beginning from the shadow of the building's imposing facade, the audience was led through a series of emotional scenarios and environments, which reached a conclusion in Club Ponderosa, with some frenetic dancing, the laying bare of things that matter, and the curious introduction of a giant seesaw.

Previous works by Aorta includes Serenading Louie by Lanford Wilson at the GBS Theatre and a joint collaboration with Hugo Danino on the Dreama Centaur at Club Ponderosa. 'If I walk through this door will I find heaven?' was devised by the company under the direction of Juliet Prague and Rob Hale ... And a special thanks goes to the whole company for their amazing energy, enthusiasm and commitment.

Walk to the sound of muffled cries
Walk to where you said I was special
Walk through the corridor of thorns
Walk to where you took me
Walk to the corner of safety
Walk to where we whispered a secret
Walk where you wish
Walk like a hero

WISHFUL THINKING
FRI 19TH JUNE, 6PM, &
SAT 20TH JUNE, 6PM
WORKSHOP: SUN 21ST JUNE, 2PM

The Indefinable Theatre Company rehearsed in Club Ponderosa to develop 'Wishful Thinking', a play which tells the story of four boarding school children in mid 20th century rural England.

It was the Company's first performance and the result of intensive group work where all members were equally involved in all aspects of creating an original theatre production.

As an extension of the play, there was also an interactive workshop that offered an experience of spontaneous theatre making in a way that reflected how the members of the Company had been working together and provided an opportunity for an experience of collective theatre making.

SOUNDCHECK
SUN 14TH JUNE, 4-8PM

Following on from three laid-back Sundays of live music, Club Ponderosa in collaboration with Lail Arad, sadly held its final Soundcheck. But staring the prospect of the return of dull Sundays in the face, Soundcheck shined on! We had a packed afternoon of musical delights, featuring: The Laurel Collective, PiP, Lail Arad, Milly Blue, Tristram, The Bodega Brothers and Olly The Octopus.

In true summer-picnic style, we invited everyone to get chopping and baking to conjure up a dish for our 'pot-luck' food table for all to sample on the theme of TUTTI-FRUITI ... There were strawberries and scones freshly baked in the club, fruity cheeses, stuffed pineapples ... and other deliciously inventive dishes.

*MaSH*
FRIDAY 12TH JUNE, 7:30-11PM

*MaSH* was a collaboration between Club Ponderosa and Wrong Music. We pummeled together the contents of the Wrong Music label, and a few friends, and came up with an evening of grindcore, punk, experimental, grime, rock with a splash of breakcore and death metal. Mmmmm ... The night started with bands We Are Power and Skul Hazards who thrashed out the way for three rapid sets by Dj’s Ebola, Floorclearer and Ladyscraper. The event was short and not-so-sweet, but oh so wholesome!

UNWRAPPING THE PRESENT
SAT 6TH JUNE, 12-8PM, &
SUN 7TH JUNE, 12-6PM

No.1 Camden Park Road & Transition Belsize presented a weekend of events and activities celebrating the history of the area and debating it's future, with a focus on ecology and sustainability.

The weekend festival included: cookery, bag making, printing and sewing workshops, a Give ‘n’ Take stand, screen-printing, costume making, bookbinding demonstrations, an introduction to medicinal herbs, story-telling, local history film screenings and discussions, foraged-food recipes, rickshaw pimping, with live music from the Northern Celts and Perhaps Contraption.

During the weekend's events a special fanzine was produced that documented the activities, the making of which was incorporated into the workshops.

About No.1 Camden Park Road and Transition Belsize:

No.1 Camden Park Road is home to the Camden Square Area Tenants and Residents Association as well as a meeting room used by many local groups including the Camden New Town History Project. Transition Belsize formed in September 2008 and is part of the wider Transition Towns Movement: a grassroots project addressing issues of climate change and the end of cheap oil through community-led initiatives.

THE BLACK MADONNA
FRI 29TH MAY, 6-11PM, &
SAT 30TH MAY, 11AM-11PM

The Black Madonna was a community celebration for all the family with two packed days of live music from acts, including: Jessica Doughty, Jackson, The Tall Tenor, Gee Bailey, Visitor Q, Kumi and DJ sets from Don Lorenzo and Shivonda.

Alongside music there was plenty more to see and do during the daytime, with poetry and spoken word performances, pimp a t-shirt workshops, story reading sessions, laughter-yoga, a fashion show, massage, the I 'n' I Dance Troop, and Drumming with Lord Eric Sugumugu and friends. (A big thanks goes to Becky for all her work organising the acts and activities!)

CHANGING THE WHEEL: BRECHT AND ME
SAT 23RD MAY, 7:30-10PM, &
SUN 24TH MAY, 4-6PM

To help set the scene for the performance, the event began with a touch of political music and song by Lizzie Shirley. This was followed by Changing the Wheel, a one-man show, written and performed by Peter Thomson, about Bertolt Brecht, the extraordinary German playwright, and lesser-known poet.

Weaving philosophies that inspired Brecht, the dark times of the 20th Century and socialism of the 21st Century, with the peculiar addition of a soap-star and Peter’s mum, the performance brought Brecht’s life alive, with wit, politics, poetry and some pertinent reflections on today.

The play featured poetry by Brecht, and was directed by Francis Rifkin.

SOUNDCHECK
SUN 17TH MAY, 4-8PM

Club Ponderosa returned with its third Soundcheck ... an informal Sunday session of live music. Alongside Lail Arad, we pulled together another amazing line-up, including: Dockers MC, Connan Mockasin, Lulu and The Lampshades, and a secret guest, Lach, freshly arrived from NYC to start his UK tour! And, seeing as summer felt like it was almost upon us, we hosted a 'potluck' British picnic!

DREAMA CENTAUR
SET UP: THURS 7TH TO SAT 9TH MAY
PERFORMANCE: SAT 9TH MAY, 7-9PM

Hugo Danino in collaboration with the Aorta Theatre Collective, created a ambitious, mesmerizing and disorientating theatrical installation in Club Ponderosa.

Drawing on fragments of his memories and experiences of the London Drama Centre, which formally occupied the building, Hugo worked with the Aorta Collective who restaged 'A Month in the Country' by Ivon Turgenev, a play often performed by the LDC. As the play unfolded, it was continually disrupted and sidelined by Hugo, who acting as a colourful master of ceremony, introduced audio-visual interventions, a second narrative involving a drunken, down-on-his-luck man, and a beautiful french song sung by his mum.

"176 Prince of Wales Road once housed the infamous Drama Centre, an evocative place that still floats, with mixed emotion, in many peoples memory. The performance will take a mouthful of the tingling air that resides in that space and blow it around, whistling up lost recollections, ineffable desires and parallel visions of a now intangible place."

VERTICAL FORM
EXPERIMENTS: FRI 1ST & SAT 2ND MAY
PERFORMANCE: SAT 2ND MAY, 6-8PM

Alex Thomas and Tom Richards utilize DIY production methods and out-moded technologies, such as acetates made from a homemade vinyl cutter, and deconstructed sequencers that are both un-programmable and unpredictable.

For Club Ponderosa they spent two days exploring their unusual and volatile DJ set-up in combination with the MASS sound-system. Throughout the day on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd, they set up and experimented with their unique vinyls and electronic gadgetry … which then culminated in a performance on Saturday evening. The MASS sound-system was put through its paces with a fusion of mechanical sounds, ambient waves, high clicks and deep, resonant bass. (The bass drivers got pretty darn hot ... and grrrr ... one blew!).

Alex and Tom recorded the session and will be making the audio available for remixing, so get in touch if you are interested ...

antiDOTE
FRI 24TH APRIL, 6:30-11PM, &
SAT 25TH APRIL, 2-11PM

Club Ponderosa pulled together two days of fantastic, free music as an alternative to the Camden Crawl!

FRIDAY: This was the anti day! We threw live music out the window and instead went for film and Djs, starting with a screening of Dan Graham's 'Rock My Religion', followed by 3 amazing sets of dubstep, house, techno with a big 'ole dash of old-skool. The sets started with Dave Gamble (Roundhouse Radio) delivering some floor shaking dubstep, then Tom Richards (see 'vertical form' above!) playing some beautifully sparse techno ... followed by the floor-filling beats and jibes of the marvelous MACH ONE (Circus Warp, Universe Tribal Gathering) with MC Jack Horner. Bliss!

SATURDAY: Was the doting day! Well, seeing as Camden had gone live music crazy, we thought we'd join in the fun. Delivering an eclectic mix of music from improv, folk, to experimental and afro-beat the line-up included: Barrel, A.J.Holmes & The Hackney Empire, Beth Jeans Houghton, Sam Lee Trio, Trombone Poetry, Hoofus, Laura J Martin, and Sculpture.

The atmosphere and performances were amazing ... and thank you to everyone who came and played.

SUPINE SOUNDCHECK
SUN 19TH APRIL, 4-8PM

A Sunday afternoon of live music, programmed in collaboration with Supine Studios and Lail Arad. We pulled closed the shutters, gelled up the lights ... to create what became the belly of a wonderful beast. This Soundcheck featured: Lail Arad, A.Human, Serafina, Seymour’s Fat Lady, Olivia Chaney, Eoin O Ruainigh and August (DJ set).

The scent of fresh bread filled the air too as dough was kneaded and baked on site, (mingled with a host of 'potluck' cheeses!), whilst the drinks and music flowed!

ROUNDHOUSE RADIO LIVE
SAT 4TH APRIL, 6-10:30PM

Roundhouse Radio maestro Dave Gamble and friends hosted an evening of music and poetry programmed and presented by young music and radio talents from Roundhouse Studios. The evenings line-up included an eclectic mix of DJs, and performances from the Roundhouse Jazz Ensemble and Poetry Collective.

VICTORY OVER THE SUN
FRI 27TH MARCH, 8-10PM,
SAT 28TH MARCH, 8-10PM, &
SUN 29TH MARCH, 3-5PM

New Factory of the Eccentric Actor presented Victory Over the Sun, an original interpretation of the 1913 Futurist opera, featuring a promenading cast of over 40 performers and musicians.

The piece began with a feast of heavily layered, random sounds, as the performers moved around Club Ponderosa dressed in bold costume and colourfully painted faces. The sometimes intangible and dizzying opera left the audience amused, dumbfounded and enthralled. Add to that, free shots of vodka to warm the cockles and a crescendo of the Internationale sung in Russian ... and this was a very rare treat indeed!

New Factory of the Eccentric actor are a non-profit theatre company, who have been active for almost 30 years. They believe in free theatre, art being accessible to all, and revolution. If you come across them, please offer your support, as they are a gem of a theatre company!

SOUNDCHECK
SUN 15TH MARCH, 4-8PM

Vive le Soundcheck! This was the first in our series of informal Sunday live music sessions, programmed in collaboration with Lail Arad. The club was packed, and so was the line-up ... as we presented Gideon Conn, The Bicycle Thieves, Arthur Delaney, and Ed Laurie. Whilst the music rolled, the ’potluck' cake table filled with home-made delights which were washed down with gallons of tea.

LINDEN BAROQUE ORCHESTRA
OPEN REHEARSAL
FRI 27TH FEBRUARY, 8-9PM

The Linden Baroque Orchestra are a 25-piece orchestra of Early Music enthusiasts using period instruments who, during this open rehearsal, played a programme of French music from the court and chamber of Louis XIV.
