UP IN THE ATTIC is a fortnightly event run by the non-profit organisation BruisedFruit Promotions.
Held every other Tuesday, in AuntieAnnies Bar(DublinRd, Belfast), the night is dedicated to showcasing local home-grown talent.
From humble beginnings in May 2005 UITA has built up a strong reputation for showcasing the best in local talent, and giving new bands that all important foot in the door of the local music industry. They’ve had almost 150 bands grace the stage in that time, and have helped the careers of rising stars like Kowalski, The Beat Poets and the Jane Bradfords.
As well as the showcase opportunities given to bands, UITA also release a compilation CD every ten shows featuring all the acts that have played. This time is no exception, and UITA Vol 5 features tracks from Cutaways, Team Fresh, General Fiasco, Bee Mick See and Sines to name but a few. The CDs will be given away free to everyone on the door of the 50th gig.

CASHIER NO.9(myspace.com/cashierno9)
The sound of Cashier No.9 was born from Danny Todd’s compulsion to create music despite having little means. A cheap sequencing package, a broken acoustic guitar and a head full of Neil Diamond was the jump off point for the electronic folk pioneer. For the past two years Cashier no 9 has been a loose project of low key gigs, self funded demo releases and chronic insomnia, while also holding down day jobs with Belfast bands Corrigan and Alloy Mental, the former a snarling punkish outfit, the latter an ambitious live techno act. The analogue charm of Danny’s music has been described as intimate but never too sentimental or confessional.
THE MINORITY(myspace.com/theminoritymusic)
2007 saw the creation of a diverse new band, The Minority, hailing from Belfast, London and Leeds. The driving forces behind the band are co-writers Tim Murphy and Alan Ladd who met at Queen’s University Belfast in 2002. Since then, they have been writing songs and collaborating with various musicians until they were joined this year by Kenny Harrower on drums and for guest appearances live and on record by Rick McKee on Lead Guitar. Their sound is a fusion of Tim’s influences of singer-songwriters and bands such as Ryan Adams, David Kitt and REM and Alan’s love of indie rock bands and classical music, most notably Radiohead, Elbow and Doves. The result is a unique style that is difficult to compare or place in any genre. Rick and Kenny have made their mark on the current songs, lifting them both live and on tracks recorded at the band’s home studio.
FREERIDER(myspace.com/freeriderrockband)
Freerider are a four-piece original contemporary rock and roll band based in Omagh. They have worked hard at their music, watching it evolve through several genres, before finally settling on what they best feel to be ‘their sound’. These formative years have also taught Freerider the art of playing a live gig, how to deliver their music with passion while keeping it tight and how to ensure that every person in the crowd takes something away from their gigs. The last year has seen Freerider writing more original material and entering ‘Battle of the Bands’ competitions, reaching the All Ireland final in the Belfast Empire.

“Every song is wholly designed to propel the chorus, to chase the pulse and to extract a smile, recalling peppy acts like Cheap Trick and Weezer…the likes of 'New Golden Rules' and 'Race For Grace' are junior classics" – Stuart Bailie, BBC Radio
“Well-crafted and upbeat…robust ultra-catchy indie rock” – David Roy, Irish News
“Just brilliant, the vitality of early Ash” – Joe Lindsay, BBC Radio
