3/8: Knights 24, Cuesta 14 Two starters were absent from the match yet the Knights simply got it done. A slow start kept it a close match by the end of the first half with the Knights up 7-5. The Knights picked it up in the second half and would eventually won the match 24-14.
3/1: Knights 28, UNLV 17 Despite blowing out UNLV last season on their turf, UNLV came with a much different side. For the first year, scholarship football players played on their rugby team, meaning 6-8 Samoans and Tongans were allowed to play. The Knights were first on the board with a try by Hooker Andrew Aguiniga '09. CLU dominated possession and Flyhalf Vince Bartels '09 intercepted a UNLV passed to make the score 14-0. UNLV scored a try before half as did Flanker Nick Dettorre to make the halftime score 21-5. The Knights, playing with nearly half of its starters sick, went on to secure the victory with another try from Dettorre, and Bartels was a perfect 4 for 4 on the day for conversions. It was a very physical match, one in which the Knights did not back down and took advantage of the opposing team's mistakes. The Knights are now 4-1 (3-1 in league). Man of the Match: Nick Dettorre
2/24: Knights 46, Azusa Pacific 7 It was a cold, rainy match and CLU came to the match with some injuries and some guys sick, yet it was total domination. Every aspect of the match was dominated by the Knights with No. 8 Rico Portaro '09 and Wing Ryan Cudahy '10 scoring two tries each, and tries by Flanker Jake Calderon '09, Outside Centre Nate Fall, Scrumhalf Josh Aquinde '11, Flyhalf Vince Bartels '09, Prop Ian Freeman '09, and Wing Malcom Mostoles '10 scoring tries as well. Bartels added three conversions as well in the domination. Man of the Match: Rico Portaro
2/16: Knights 22, UC-Riverside 19 With the home crowd in support, CLu went for it out the gate. It was a physical non-league match with an injured CLU side demoralizing UCR. No. 8 Rico Portaro '09 scored the first try of the day, followed by Outside Centre Nate Fall scoring another. Though the match's score was close at times, Cal Lutheran dominated and was constantly on the attack. Three UCR ruggers left the match with injuries from the devestating blows dealt by the nights. Fall would add another try before the final whistle, Inside Centre Hector De Alba '09 scored his first try as a Knight and Flyhalf Vince Bartels '09 added a conversion. Man of the Match: Nate Fall
2/2: CLU Knights 28, Westmont 8 After a tough first match, the Knights were able to get it together. More experience and a hard week of practice led to a dominating victory. Westmont scored first with a penalty kick, but CLU responded with Hooker Andrew Aguiniga '09 scoring a try within minutes. CLU's rampage went on with a 70 metre run by Wing Ryan Cudahy '10, who missed the Oxy match with an injury. Dominating the Westmont pack and backs, CLU cruised with another try added by Aguiniga and a try from Lock Jake Calderon '09. Flyhalf Vince Bartels '09 converted all four conversions, including one from the touch line. Man of the Match: Andrew Aguiniga
1/26: Oxy 43 - CLU Knights 5 With one practice, 8 guys starting at new positions and with few numbers, CLU had a rough first match. Oxy had already had 3 weeks of practice compared to one for CLU. In a respectable effort, guys who had never played before started and played the entire match. Two starters went down with injuries. Nate Fall (Grad) scored the lone try though valiant efforts were put forth by Prop Bret Bays '08, Lock/No. 8 Jake Calderon '09, Scrummie Josh Aquinde '11, and Fall. Man of the Match: Nate Fall
