Running Advice and News provides timely information about marathon running, triathlon and ultra-running to readers around the world. Coach Joe English provides his insight with daily articles on training topics, racing news and motivation as the main editor for the blog. Guest authors are also featured on Running Advice and News from time-to-time.

In addition to writing for Running Advice and News (formerly Running Wild with Coach Joe), Coach Joe is a professional marathon and triathlon coach in Portland, Oregon. He is the Head Coach of American Endurance Sports Coaching and the Team in Training Marathon Program in Portland. Joe is also the running coach for the Portland Triathlon Club and a member of its Board of Directors.

Joe is an expert marathon runner and triathlete and also runs ultra-marathons. He started running sometime around the age of 6 when his mom sent him off to a Boy’s and Girl’s Club fun run and it just stuck. He completed his first marathon at age 17 in Portland in 1988, having trained on his own with no guidance and “no idea” what he was doing, but finished the race in 3:58:00. He has since completed dozens of marathons, cycling centuries, triathlons, duathlons, ultra-running events and an Ironman triathlon.

At age 37, he spends more time coaching than training, but continues to race, posting a 3:00:49 marathon time in 2006 in Sacramento and a 1:22:12 half-marathon time in Portland. In 2007, Joe completed his first 50K and 50 Mile trail races. In 2008, Joe plans to return to the Boston Marathon for another trip to the biggest event in marathon running.

Joe has been trained extensively as a coach. He has received certifications from RxRunning, Team in Training (Running, Cycling, Triathlon), and USA Triathlon. Specialty areas that he works into his curriculum include a strong emphasis on nutrition, hydration and pacing techniques.

I had no idea how bad I had cut my face....I'm going to have a black eye, both knees are cut open and my lip is busted. I HATE being clumsy. That is my #1 downfall (no pun intended) to running.
