The unified alter ego of Jason Short and Marc Smith, Coalition of the Killing is the flagship of the Auralism fleet. Having met in Florida in 1999, Short and Smith fused their mutual love for otherworldly head trips and steel-toed synths into a longstanding collaborative relationship. By 2003, their collective musical vision had widened to absorb the new strains of minimal techno and German IDM leaking from across the Atlantic. But as they developed their sound, it became quickly apparent that their music possessed a musicality and sense of humor that was wholly unique to Coalition of the Killing. An electrically charged amalgamation of crunchy rattling percussion and cauterizing analog synths, COTK's off-balance productions were meant for a party where the floorboards aren't quite level and the walls could collapse at any time. They were also ahead of their time, as it turned out—after receiving voluminous praise but no firm offers, Short and Smith decided to use COTK as the fulcrum to launch their own imprint, Auralism, in 2005.
Now, operating from San Francisco, COTK is taking their sound to international audiences with a live set that's equal parts Ableton and Machinedrum. 2008 has been a fantastic year for the boys with releases on Karloff, Lobotomy, and an upcoming release on San Francisco's Blipswitch Digital. They have been getting much support on dancefloors everywhere from the likes of Laurent Garnier, Dan Curtain, Mia, Paco Osuna, Florian Meindl, and many others."When Marc and I write together we tend to get really abstract," explains Short. Smith agrees: "We can be grinding and grimy, but at the same time quirky and weird, even ethereal. You may want to wear your helmet!"

Coalition of the Killing - I Modulate You EP (Auralism, Karloff, USA)
Jason Short and Marc Smith are pushing all the right buttons. Whether you've caught their live act at this year's Movement festival or heard their latest release on Sub-Static's sister label Karloff, COTK are on point with their sound: An electrically charged amalgamation of crunchy rattling percussion and cauterizing analog synths, their off-balance productions were meant for a party where the floorboards aren't quite level and the walls could collapse at any time.
Coalition of the Killing's debut on Lobotomy shows their brash, unashamed and relentless trademark sound that's taking the techno world by storm with Maetrik, Stewart Walker, Alland Byallo, Elon, Argenis Brito, Franklin de Costa, Falko Brockspier, Mia and even Touane listening in.
While Jason's and Marc's musical relationship is hardly new (in fact they've been releasing music going on five years), the two are securing for themselves a long future as leaders of the new underground techno sound. This time next year, there won't be many a tech-head not familiar with COTK, thanks in part to their huge new single on Germany's Karloff, plus original and remix material on EQ, Fade, Manual, Lobotomy and of course their homebase at Auralism Records.
You may have heard the (possibly) sad news about 222. But rest assured, Blipswitch will certainly keep it coming no matter what!!
