About me: Coconut Beach Volleyball Complex was built in April 1988 as a cooperative endeavor between Mike Drury, a local business man, Bruce White, president of the Louisiana Outdoor Volleyball Association, and NORD.
Coconut Beach is a 100,000 square-foot outdoor beach volleyball complex in the West End Park area of New Orleans. Coconut Beach is one of the largest man-made sand complex in the United States, with over 4,000 players a week participating in organized leagues and tournaments.
The complex was destroyed in August 2005 by Hurricane Katrina. Partially rebuilt with only six lighted courts, the complex re-opened June 3rd, 2006. By April 2007 the court number increased to fourteen as some of the land from the original complex was released from the Corps of Engineers, who had commandeered the area for site preparation of flood gates on the 17th Street Canal. At the present time the complex is working on the third phase of reconstruction, adding an additional eight courts for April 2008. When this phase is completed, Coconut Beach will be the largest, lit sand volleyball complex in the country.
When Coconut Beach reopened in 2006, the complex hosted the 18th Annual Children’s Hospital Tournament. To date, Coconut Beach has helped raise over $1,000,000.00 for charity.
Louisiana Outdoor Volleyball Association (LOVA) has sanctioned over 490 events at Coconut Beach since the first volleyball tournament in June 1988. The complex has hosted national professional tournament such as the AVP Tour, DeKyper/Playboy Tour, Coors Light WPVA Tour, Bud Light 4-Men & -Women Tour, Planet Spike, Serve it Up, and the Spalding Gold Tour.
