Find out more about Rich Merritt and Code of Conduct The debut novel about gay life in the United States Marine Corps by Rich Merritt, author of the 2005 bestselling memoir, Secrets of a Gay Marine Porn Star

“You've gotten away with it for so long, you think you’re immune to the danger..."

At 33, Don Hawkins has spent the better part of his life, in every sense, as a U.S. Marine. Enlisting to escape an alcoholic father and stepmother, he became the unofficial leader of a group of gay servicemen and women, all compelled to guard their sexual identity as faithfully as they serve their country. But with nearly inaugurated president Clinton’s promise to lift the ban on gays in the military, Don is optimistic that a brighter era is dawning – and not just politically.

Ten years now since his lover died in Beirut, Don is finally ready to love again, and falls headlong for Patrick, a handsome young helicopter pilot. As the relationship develops, Don lets his guard down—in potentially dangerous ways. Because forces are at work in the naval investigative service, in Congress, and even in the bars and clubs that Don views as his turf, with a vicious agenda that will have unforeseen consequences…

Drawing on his own experiences as a Marine, Rich Merritt has crafted an extraordinary story of love, loss, duty, betrayal, and hope. Most of all Code of Conduct is a deeply compelling exploration of the power of loyalty—to friends, lovers, country, and the unwavering dictates of our own hearts.

RICH MERRITT. Author, Attorney, former Marine, ex-fundamentalist. This debut novel, Code of Conduct, is the ideal follow-up to his 2005 memoir, Secrets of a Gay Marine Porn Star, a book that shocked the nation with its graphic, but realistic portrayal of one American’s life, from deep within the fundamentalist enclave of Bob Jones University to the faraway combat zones of the US Marine Corps in the Persian Gulf.

Following My Heart, a memoir, chronicles a life-journey of self-discovery that encompasses sex, spirituality, psychedelics, political activism and literature. It is an unconventional story of love and hope in difficult times.

The City, my seventh novel, spans nearly fifty years in the lives of Theo Demetrios, his sister ArtD, their parents, lovers and friends from beat era San Francisco to the twenty-first century. The title also alludes to the ancestral home of the Demetrios family.

Both books, published by Persona Press, are now available in bookstores.

On March 22nd at 7:00 p.m. OutLoud! Books and Gifts is proud to welcome best-selling author Christopher Rice to our store for a special reading and signing of his eagerly anticipated new novel, Blind Fall.

Blind Fall is a story of honor and integrity, of turning failure into victory. It is a stunning departure for Christopher Rice: the story of two men, one a Marine, one gay, who must unite to avenge the death of the man they both loved--one as a brother-in-arms, one as a lover--and to survive.

Christopher is the son of award-winning author Anne Rice. He has written the best-selling novels Light and Day, A Density of Souls, and The Snow Garden.

Please come help us welcome Mr. Rice this Saturday the 22nd at 7:00 p.m. and pick up your copy of Blind Fall.

OutLoud! Books and Gifts (615.340.0034) is located at 1703 Church Street in historic Midtown Nashville.
