"With a stunning similarity to the defunct Dismemberment Plan, Chicago’s Cola Wars are just this close to spastic revolution, a seizure of notes and yelps. That it doesn’t get there is incredible—with a stone-solid ability to pen tight, intricate songs, the band keeps you on that edge, just short of the point of chaos. And there are beautiful moments as well—the distinct melodies that are crammed into the six songs on the band’s debut EP "Red Flag Day" could fill a canyon. Even when they sweeten up, like on "Apt M," Cola Wars manage to keep it complex. None of this is life-altering or particularly amazing, but it’s very promising, a young band still finding the right notes for the right songs, mapping its future with stops and starts. The band wildly switches tempos and progressions on "The Ghosts of What We Know," the EP’s final song, and the execution proves they have all these songs in vice grips."
