An emerging talent on the Glasgow folk scene, Orkney-born Colin Nicholson has been playing the accordion for almost ten years. Currently studying at Stow College, Colin is an integral part of many bands, both ‘south’ and in Orkney, including Quarterdeck and The Stow College Folk Band. He also regularly performs in duos with guitarist Ben Fitzgerald and fiddler Craig Corse.
It is through his time at Stow that he has been gaining expert tuition from Angus Lyon (Angus Lyon and Ruaridh Campbell, Box Club), building on valuable coaching from Ian Lowthian and Jean Leonard through the Orkney Traditional Music Project. All three tutors have had considerable influences on his playing.
Although having played the accordion since the age of nine, it was initially pipes that drew him towards studying music. After a brief spell beginning to learn the fiddle, he moved on to what would become his main musical focus – the accordion. Continuously looking to broaden his musical horizons, Colin has recently taken up learning the whistle, and also has experience as a folk pianist.
Despite only being at the beginning of his career, Colin is already a relatively experienced musician, having performed at several prestigious festivals throughout the UK - Celtic Connections, the Orkney Folk Festival, the St Magnus Festival, the Shetland Accordion and Fiddle Festival and Yn Chruinnaght, an inter-Celtic festival in the Isle of Man. Whilst in Glasgow he has also had the opportunity to perform on many high-profile stages, including the SECC, the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and the Centre for Contemporary Arts.

Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN
Once drove an old sedan, up north, From a place in Sydney to Cairns; Then to Kuranda I went forth, By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market, With fresh fruits of tropical kind; Walked to the creek through lush thicket - Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe; Then, outside, as I wrote for yen, Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey, You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know - Assured voices, elderly men. That’s now several years ago, And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.
Hiya Colin - You recovered yet ?? Wiz great hearing and you and Craig playing in Shetland - The Whole weekend was Fantastic - Are you getting home for The Orkney Fest ?
