Carole King/Joni Mitchell love-child, though that's not literally possible...
Colleen Brown has had quite a year. In Canada she released her 2nd full length album, “Foot In Heart” to strong reviews and ravenous college and community radio play. She spent 6 weeks with both feet firmly planted in the Earshot! Folk/Roots top ten charts, despite the fact that she insists she makes pop music (listen to the doo-wop inspired “Boyfriend” or watch the dance-filled music video for “Love You Baby” if you need further evidencing). As 2008 progressed she played well attended concerts and showcases, wow-ing unsuspecting music festival goers with her candid and organically clever lyrics, brain circling melodic hooks and vibrant, emotive contralto. Her OTHER band- the equally formidable rock ‘n’ roll trio The Secretaries- finagled an impressive opening spot with globe-conquering (Madonna-endorsed) gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello, as well as funding for the ladies’ first official recording. Then in the fall, Colleen captured an Alberta Emerging Artist Award alongside multi-media wunderkind Chad VanGaalen.
Colleen admits she is still finding her footing in the music game, as the album has yet to see official release in the US, Australia and Europe. But certainly those who want to stand ahead of the trends will be watching where Colleen is headed in 2009.
"Brown challenges all of her songs head-on, her sweet yet triumphant vocals ringing throughout the record"- Amanda Ash, Exclaim! Magazine
"Her second album, a stellar collection of rootsy piano-pop tunes, proves she is a national treasure in the making -- along the lines of Joni Mitchell, Anne Murray, Gordon Lightfoot or k.d. lang." Sandra Sperounes, The Edmonton Journal
Brown's new album is absolutely awesome...It's a slapshot into the back of the net, Colleen. -Fish Griwkowsky, The Edmonton Sun
That was a great set at The Drake. A breezy 70's spirit, impeccable harmonies, floating through the soul-stirring radio-friendly stratosphere. An inspired, energy-fueled sound, leavened with roots-folk gleam, Joni Mitchell-inflected vocals, and sparkling pop shimmer. Keep to your musical vision.
It was nice meeting you a week or so ago with Laura! You're set was great! Hopefully I'll see you around town again. And maybe we can play a show together!
