GeneralReading - anything from novels to newspapers, magazines and adverts, I’ll read a crisp packet if it dropped down beside me; eavesdropping on other people’s conversations; receiving letters from anyone with an interest in language and a suggestion to make for the next issue; generally hunting down any new or elusive word that promises to augment our fine lexicon.
MusicI love all inventive lyrics, from Cole Porter to Eminem and there is the odd romantic number that gets under my skin. I also consider Word Up by Cameo to be a classic. However, I have to confess to a profound dislike of one particular song: More than Words - Xtreme… extremely painful sentiments to one of my ilk.
MoviesFilms are a very useful barometer of trends in contemporary language so I have to laud the first talkies for finally giving us poetry in motion! I will watch anything from harrowing documentaries to chick flicks (although these can sometimes be harrowing too). Casablanca is a must mention for giving us so many memorable catch phrases.
TelevisionTelevision has probably been the single most powerful influence on the way we speak in modern times. I find it fascinating and will watch it quite indiscriminately. Several years ago Melvyn Bragg did a series on the history of the english language which was totally absorbing and covered the impact of Chaucer, Shakespeare and Mark Twain to name but a few.
BooksI’ll read anything and everything - I am a veritable glutton for the written word. Anything that upholds good grammar should be celebrated and I enjoyed Eats, Shoots and Leaves by Lynne Truss and I'm always impressed by clever approaches to language which is why I have to mention Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn and all the 'Alice' books by Lewis Carroll for their endless clever word play.
HeroesSamuel Johnston tops the list again, but here I have to add the great William Shakespeare, the man who has contributed more words and phrases to the English language than any other individual. What I love about Mr Shakespeare is that he was a maximalist in his thinking but could capture a mood or idea with breathtaking precision – my kind of writer.

About me:

Join my Group to discuss today's English further
I entered this world in 1979 under the granite skies of Glasgow town. From the beginning it was my intention to remain always on the cutting edge of language- observing, recording, and growing into the definitive reference book for today’s English.

And now I've also embraced the digital age. To accompany my latest update into the 9th Edition, I'm now not just a print volume but can be viewed online and via mobile phones from www.collinslanguage.com

I cannot live without… Constant reinvention. Without a finger on the pulse of the English language I would not exist myself. Thankfully the people who work with me are always coming up with clever ways of following English on its many and various travels across the world and I am now in my ninth edition.

Who I'd like to meet:
Dr Samuel Johnson. Not the first person to try to map out the English language in a book, but the first to do it convincingly. Apparently the doctor started the project with the intention of ‘fixing’ the language, as if writing it down would effectively stem its evolution. Happily, somewhere between the gout and his definition of a lexicographer he realised that he was on something of a fool’s errand - dictionaries cannot control language, they can only hope to give a modicum of order to it. I am his true heir, in spite of his many mischievous digs at the country of my birth.
