I am most passionate about my friends, the arts and history. I am extremely passionate about the preservation of old movies and old movie theaters. Like Jazz, movies and the movie palaces of the 1920s-1950s are uniquely American ventures, and it is important that we save the history that is left to our charge.
Music
I still can't get enough of old standards and retro lounge -- big band music remains my favorite -- Cab Calloway was FINALLY honored on the Grammys this year! Also, I am an '80s underground music lover: David Sylvian & Japan, Chris & Cosey, Dead Can Dance -- just listen to FRED on XM radio and you will get the idea! It is the soundtrack to my high school and college years and beyond.
Movies
Well, I bet you can guess from my other answers that I love classic films. I am more than a film buff -- I am a film junkie! I met my husband, Mark, at the Deep Ellum Film Festival.
I love to see as many films as I can in the theater. I like mainstream movies, but I love to be challenged by a great documentary, an edgy indie film and educated by a great foreign film. And, of course, I try to support as many screenings of classic films that I possibly can.
Which Silent Film Actress are You?
You are Josephine Baker Truly an epiphany and shock to the conservative American society in the early twentieth century, you are decades before your time. Open minded and liberal, you stand up for what you believe in. If society doesn't like or accept it, you move to a culture that will. You will not put up with snooty, prejudiced opinions and refuse to support racism. You believe everyone is literally equal. You can't have children of your own, but you do adopt 12 children from many different races and call them your "Rainbow Children". You don't adopt because you can't get a date by any means! In fact, men flock to you! Two men even had an old fashion dual in a cemetery for your favor! And it is said one rejected suitor killed himself at your feet. Astonishing, beautiful, intelligent, talented and well rounded, you can't stand the racial discrimination in the US at that time and become a citizen of France where you are celebrated and well loved. In time, the US realizes what it has lost and honors your memory in many ways. Josephine Baker was a brave and genuine example for her time and future generations. No one can come quite close to her integrity and vivacity. Take this quiz!
Television
Have you seen "Mad Men" on AMC???? It is truly brilliant in bringing 1959-1960 to beautiful, vivid life. Bravo AMC!! And good job, "Mad Men" on your 2 Golden Globe wins!
You Belong in 1956
You're fun loving, romantic, and more than a little innocent. See you at the drive in!
I mostly read biographies, art, and film studies books. My favorite authors are Milan Kundera and Anais Nin. The last book I thoroughly enjoyed reading was The Red Leather Diary by Lily Koppel -- Lily found a diary kept by a teenager in NYC for 5 years from 1929-1934. The story that Lily weaves around the sparse but poetic words of Florence Wolfson's journal entries unfolds a spice slice of life that we have lost. The perfect compliment to Complicated Women: Sex and Power in Pre-Code Hollywood, which focused attention on the films and the pioneering women in film industry between the years of 1929-1934. I would love to have speculative discussions about how different America would be if the Hayes Code had never been enforced in Hollywood.
Heroes
My Dad is my greatest hero.
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?'. Actually, who are we not to be. You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. It's not just in some of us. It is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
--Nelson Mandela -- 1994 Inaugural Speech
I am a film publicist and would be happy to talk to anyone with a budget about getting the word out about their film -- in the works or in distribution.
