Bridgend Welsh rockers Evil i came to Manchester Academy to play MCR Promotions 'Academy Unsigned', supporting Academy regulars Neo Choline, and headliners Troops of Mafeking.
Exchanging little chat backstage with the rest of the bands, it was clear Evil i were daunted by being so far from home. Comfort was given however by the members of Neo Choline who quickly befriended the 5-piece.
With the crowd building up, Evil i made their way to the stage, closely followed by Neo Choline who were interested to see what Bridgend's unsigned circuit had to offer. What followed can only be described as amazing. After knowing the guys off-stage, it was clear that everyone had underestimated the hidden talent they had.
The stage looked unique to Evil i, which is rare for Academy Unsigned nights. The drum kit was draped in fairy lights, giving an ambiance and somewhat homely touch to the space Evil i consumed. Vocalist, Mike, had the natural stage presence every frontman can only dream of having. Despite not moving, dancing or showboating as much as other frontmen, it was clear that he, along with his band, had the stage and the audience gripped firmly in the palms of their hands for the entire set.
Part way through, the audience got time to pick up their jaws and process their thoughts on Evil i as drummer Paul had to fix his drum-pedal. Before he could finish, guitarist Miff regained the grasp on the audience by improvising a several minute solo. Soon, all was fixed and Miff was forced to snap out of soloing to continue the set.
Seeing as I was completely new to Evil i's music I couldn't tell you for the life of me what songs they played or in what order. However, I can tell you this. Evil i are truly one of the best live performances I have seen at Manchester Academy Unsigned.
Evil i are rumoured to be coming back to the North-west to play alongside new friends Neo Choline. VEW magazine will definitely not be missing out on that show, and we strongly urge you not to either! - J Leadbetter; VEW Magazine
Evil I are essentially an unashamed rock band but EP opener ÔCarty and BrownÕ hints at prog tendencies with its floaty opening giving way to dense riffage that shifts tempo in all the right places. ÔLeo And His Magic BulletÕ opens with a riff that brings to mind Faith No More and has an epic drum sound that makes you sit up and take notice. The lyrics blend the portrayal of key moments in American history with a disdain for the lunacy of the nationÕs government in a voice that would benefit from a more honest delivery but isnÕt lacking in feeling.
Final track ÔEgas MonzÕ opens with the sound of running water and a strong breeze then sprawls into a well-crafted rock anthem via a hint of melody that IÕd like to have seen given a little more room to breathe. For anyone who enjoyed the music of Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, Evil I will be just what the doctor ordered, and due to the recent postal strikes the prescription has taken a long time to arrive but just maybe this could be the band to make it happen.
Each subsequent listen of this CD has been more pleasurable than the last. These guys are tight as a unit and know how to play their instruments. As a debut recording this shows more than a hint of promise and I hope to hear more in the not too distant future. - Dave Urwin; Live Music Scene.
With a name like ÔEvil-IÕ, I naturally expected to hear dark metal rifts alongside a badly tempered man screaming, but this band are not to be mistaken with any such stereotypes.
Their debut E.P. ÔKicksÕ holds four tracks essential for any alternative rockerÕs following the likes of Pearl Jam, Audioslave and Muse. ÔCarty and BrownÕ harbours the most memorable melody, whilst ÔMoney TalksÕ and ÔLeo and His Magic BulletÕ present the necessary, exhilarating and captivating guitar soloÕs.
Lyrically they are refreshing and professional, musically they are tight and mind blowing; without doubt, given time, this band hold the key to taking rock music even further into the future.

Evil I are a band I've known from grass roots and whose continuing development I've been keeping a close eye on. I'd previously felt they were underachieving, not in any aspect of their songwriting or peformance but more the lack of dates in their live calender. Having quickly checked their myspace I'm only to happy to be proved wrong when confronted by a long list of upcoming dates. I'm also pleasantly surprised by this new EP.
Already aware of the quality of the boys songwriting talents I'm initially surprised by the quality of the recording. Sonic One have made some great contributions to the production rather than just capturing the band. The atmospheric delays and swells in opening track "Carty and Brown" add further interest to a song that would by no means have you reaching for the skip button anyhow.
Borrowing influences from the likes of Pearl Jam, and Audioslave is always going to be an attraction to me but it's the combination of this and the influence of more current acts like The Used and Coheed and Cambria which prevents this from just being "the 90's re-packaged" and gives it an identity of it's own.
The quality is consistent and all four tracks power through with a similiar energy and dynamic and will be surely to make their way onto many a playlist.
My sole concern, being a lover of lyrics, was the difficulty for me at least to relate to the not-so-hidden political agenda which seems to mostly address an American market. Perhaps I'm missing the point and this is simply a cunning marketing plan to do exactly that. Either way I'm happy to think of it on a purely musical level and sitback and enjoy.

Colours Of One formed at the beginning of 2008 under the name 'Evil i', amongst the bustling South Wales music scene.
With members who are all interested in different genres of music, our sound is something special, something unique, something we have worked hard to achieve. Colours Of One is built on compromise, being able to create a sound that five different musical backgrounds are able to love. And we hope that same cross-genre appeal can transfer to you, no matter what type of music you enjoy.
Our first gig was played in January 2008, and since then, we've been privileged enough to have graced the stages in almost every major venue in the area, with successful outings at Cardiff's Clwb Ifor Bach, Barfly, The Point and Cardiff International Arena, as well as Sin City in Swansea, TJs in Newport and many more clubs, halls and universities.
2008 also saw our first adventures across the border, with a '5-star reviewed' show at Manchester Academy, and we were well-received at London's Clapham Grand Theatre and the main stage at Islington Academy.
After changing our name to 'Colours of One', we are now looking to expand our fanbase even further, and we are now looking towards the release of our new mini-album 'Bad News Makes Big Noise'; the follow-up to our debut EP which garnered many positive reviews and had significant airplay on many Welsh and London-based radio stations.
Hoping to build on the previous success, 'Bad News Makes Big Noise' will be released very soon, and we can't wait to share our new material with every one of you.
