At one time, Hawaiian music was the most popular music in the
United States, outselling all other types of music (classical, jazz, etc.)
combined. The influence of the Hapa Haole style was widespread
and continues to be felt today. Country and Western Swing steel styles
are the direct descendants of the Hawaiian masters like Sol Hoopii,
Andy Iona, Dick McIntire, King Bennie Nawahi and many others. The
first electric instrument was the frying pan Hawaiian lap steel
which opened the door for every electric instrument since.
It is in the tradition of these great musicians that Combo Mahalo was
formed to spread the message of International Hawaiianism and
Aloha spirit.
Aloha! Please check out our new "Vampire Bankers" comic music video. The guy who directed Madonna's first music vid was our director, too! Hope you like it!
Thank you all so much for your good wishes, positive thoughts, and support! I'm so excited to be nominated as an artist for the first time on "ikena", alongside Tia Carrere. I've been riding on her coat-tails since high school, when I got my first opportunity to play at the Waikiki Shell as her pianist in the Brown Bags to Stardom talent competition! hee. hee. I'm also very happy for uncle Dennis Kamakahi who received his first Grammy nomination as a producer on "The Spirit of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar".
mahalo nui loa (thank you very much),
