Comic Sans, like a few of this week’s bunch of ragtag independent bands, hail from our own neck of the woods. And like a few of the other bands in this column, it’s a guitars+keys+bass+drums+multiple vocalists combo deal, today’s garage band no-brainer equivalent to burger+fries+coke. Still, it’s impossible to refute a combination that yields results like the twisted nightmarish first track Thom Moore, racing with a dark adrenaline, getting more and more frantic, like the soundtrack to a chase scene through the halls of a haunted castle. The Horseman also deals out the spook, albeit with playful mad-scientist tendencies, sounding like Bluejuice might, except if they were better. Even Berlin, with the braindead repeated shouted chorus of “We’re getting a tattoo!” is totally fun despite being ridiculous. Forget not liking Comic Sans – what’s harder is not listening to it again straight away. " .. .. ..- TIME OFF MAGAZINE EP REVIEW - DIGITAL NATIVES -.. .. .. "Everyone’s a font nerd these days. They all prefer their own particular style of lettering, and like to spend times at font parties arguing over what is the world’s best font. There’s very little debate left however about what is the worst font in the universe. The winner by a massive margin is Comic Sans, designed by Vincent Connare in 1994, and overused by idiots making flyers for garage sales ever since. One can hope that the band have chosen this name for hilarious reasons, and in that case I salute them. I think. It’s easy to see why they’re fast developing a hipster fanbase in their hometown of Brisbane, high energy disco garage played with some proper energy and gusto. They also somehow manage to create a bit of an individual sound and uniqueness which is quite a feat considering how many bands are still doing this stuff. The highlight for me is ‘Berlin’ but it’s a solid group of songs altogether, with kick ass production from Magoo and is a very good debut effort." .. .. ..- SCENE MAGAZINE EP REVIEW - DIGITAL NATIVES -.. .. .. "The gang that is Comic Sans picked up garage rock for a steal, took it in for a sevice and soaked it up with cult inducing organs and synths, octa-fuzzed guitars, new-wave bass and vintage punk vocals to form what could be the best haunted mansion, midnight halloween party soundtrack ever. Channeling both the youthful exuberance and dark raw hooks of The Horror's early work, Comic Sans take a welcome step away from the class box with lead single 'Nani' showing off synth-pad greatness the likes of even Air would swoon over." .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ......Comic Sans - Vixen @ Lambda Alhambra Lounge 24/6/2010.. from ..Oliver Duncan.. on ..Vimeo..... .. ...... ...... .. .. .. .. ....................real..editor....best profile tools................real..editor....best profile tools........................ -

"After playing a killer set at Cheap Thrills festival only hours beforehand, Comic Sans take the stage and deliver their craziest and arguably most entertaining set to date. Having clearly taken advantage of the festival rider before the show, the shirtless five-piece (featuring Howl's Galen Strachan and Michael Belsar on keys) are relentless in their delivery of their disco-punk gems, thrashing their instruments with conviction and tremendous vigour. The crowd goes wild as frontman Tomas Stevenson strips down to his underwear and performs favourite ‘Thom Moore’, a ripping track that sounds like it would fit some of the more graphic horror films of today. ‘The Horseman’ is another deadly number, as is ‘Nani’, the bands’ current single which is darker and more melodic than any other track in tonight’s set, leaving the crowd both begging for more and ready for what is to come." .. .. ..- Tyler Jones (Time Off Magazine).. .. .. .. "Kicking things off in Building 10, local lads Comic Sans provide some high energy, riff heavy tunes for those that were lucky enough to make it through the gates early. Their dance-inducing songs, made possible with two drummers and a whole lot of synth, leave the triple j Unearthed winners sweat-soaked and just a little bit cocky. On songs ‘Tom Moore’ and ‘Nani’ guitarist Tom Stevenson’s voice seems rather similar to that of an evil genius.".. .. ..- Time Off Magazine.. .. .. .. "I love how there are a lot of different influences crammed into 3 and a 1/2 minutes of twitchy indie-punk. It's like Battles and Q & Not U's lovechild." .... ..- Dom Alessio (Triple J).. .... .. "Dark melodic percussive pop punk. There's a british sound to the vocals and overall feel. It's well produced and catchy.
