Bunky Echo-Hawk(Pawnee/Yakama)
I am a proACTIVE ARTist. I believe this is a great time to be Indigenous. There are a great number of issues facing Native Americans today, which I confront with my choice of weapons: paints, brushes, canvas, my mind and my culture. There is also a great deal of beauty and humor in our cultures, which I also render every chance I get.
I have been painting for years now, and have exhibited my work throughout the nation and overseas. I also write, mainly poetry these days, but have had some of my plays produced. I am also a free-lance graphic designer and photographer.
I proactively use my art to address issues, to fundraise for various Native nonprofits, and to help Indian-owned businesses. I travel a great deal, which isn’t easy with a family, all over the country. I love public speaking and meeting people from all over.
In addition to being a full-time dad, I am also a co-founder and youth trainer forNVision, a national Native nonprofit that focuses on Native youth development. We reach out to Native youth through multi-media arts and leadership development. It’s fresh. We’re new, but we’re already doing big things in Indian Country!
I live to paint. I live for our culture. I live to write. I live for our youth. I live for our future. I live to exchange ideas. I live to be a voice. I live to see, in my lifetime, change for the better. I live for proactive action. This is how I’m living. How are you living?
I want to hear from y'all! Holla!

Who I'd like to meet:
THE ANTIQUES ROAD SHOW
is coming to my town
so I look around my tipi condo
for junk – something old.
See I need money or the idea
of money. I need to know
how much I am worth and my toaster
is only thirty years old
and not worth the crumbs inside it.
My uncle had his leggings
appraised – they were only ‘bout 15
maybe 20 eyars old but he wore
them every weekend until they were
thin like rice paper. Thirty thousand
dollars is what the expert told
my uncle – 30 grand for these
Cheyenne, circa 1830s leggings.
My Pawnee uncle said, “I’ll take it.”
No thanks for that much info anyway, at least that gives us a meet up time. If it is not open to the public, us people here at NARA will have to figure out some way to invite you to one of our youth gatherings next year. I work in suicide prevention and my coworker Shawneeta Yahtin works in our Systems of Care program. Thanks again! :)
Hey Bunky, I've been telling my coworkers about you performing at the NIKE headquarters but I can't find anything about the event that your doing the live performance, like a flier or anything on the NIKE website. Is it open to the public and what time is it? We were thinking about carpooling and need to know more about it, lol. Sorry don't mean to stalk you but we're excited to see you perform LIVE. Thanks!
