Committing Poetry In Times of War is a new film about the power of the voice to speak truth in times of censorship and repression. The film documents the case of several public school teachers who lost their jobs or were suspended due to their refusal to censor the poetry of their students in a Slam Poetry club, or remove student artwork or views questioning the war in Iraq. Situated within the context of enforced patriotism and police repression, the words of the poets speak truth to power and challenge the complacent and unquestioned march to war. Promoting peace, social justice, and above all, the freedom of creative expression and the passion of living a poetic life, Committing Poetry In Times of War urges us all to "Commit Poetry" and live our lives bravely and passionately in the face of forces that would quiet our creative spirits and take away the very freedoms that we are supposedly fighting for.
