I opened on October 22, 1928 as the Capitol Theatre. I primarily screened films (and talking ones at that!) and showed some live entertainment as well. In 1936, a flood submerged most of my first floor and stage. The damage was substantial. The passing years were not kind to me.
Not having a chance to fully recover from the flood,with the economy plummeting, and with television coming on the scene, I felt my fate was one swing away from the wrecking ball. It looked like my future was going to be spent as a parking lot.
Then, in 1989, The Williamsport-Lycoming Foundation, Pennsylvania College of Technology, and the City of Williamsport announced I was to be saved and turned into a performing arts center! You can imagine how relieved I was. I even got a new name: Community Arts Center.
I was given a major facelift! In 1993, my doors reopened. I will be turning 80 this October and I have never looked better.
