Community Connections is committed to breaking the cycle of family illiteracy by improving parents' educational and parenting skills. In order for us to do this, we offer a wonderful program to enhance education for both parent and child. While staying at the Davis Center, women can earn their GED through education provided by Community Connections in partnership with Florida Community College at Jacksonville. At the same time the adults are participating in this program, their children are also learn through our day care/childcare facilities. At any given time, Community Connections has tutors/volunteers on-site to provide educational needs to children and adults of all shapes and sizes!
The second program, Ready to Work, is located in one of Mayor John Peyton's most Intensive Care Neighborhoods. Situated just off of Emerson and Philips Highway at the Sable Palms facility, the program offers intensive care management and works to emphasize positive parenting, education and employability skills to struggling families.
Music
Music is a very important part of the rehabilitation process. It can be used as a tool to give hope when a person feels and believes there is no hope in sight for them.
Since we are a family-oriented organization, most of the movies that we see are "family" movies. We go on field trips to see movies, have movie nights at the centers, and take the time to give back to the homeless community what has been taken away from them. Some of the movies we like to watch together are: SHREK 1, 2, and 3, Pirate of the Caribbean 1, 2, and 3 - :) - Monster's Inc., Monster House, CARS, Finding Nemo, Lady and the Tramp, A Cinderella Story, and Finding Neverland - ALL FAMILY MOVIES!!!
Television
Books
Donations are a very important part of what Community Connections does. In addition to monetary support, gifts of books and other items necessary to keep our facilities as up to date as possible are needed daily.
Heroes
The Jacksonville Community, the City of Jacksonville, the U.S. Department of HUD, all the private foundations that help us to accomplish our mission and all of the countless volunteers that offer their time, love and passion to our cause are our heroes. All of them are our friends and we love them all. If you have any interest in becoming a local hero of Community Connections, call us at 904-350-9949. We would love to have you!

Community Connections has been providing safe housing alternatives to women, children and families since 1911. Originally, the YWCA, Community Connections serves the homeless or shelter residents who are attempting to break out of the cycle of poverty or abuse with which they might be faced. Our housing programs not only provide them with a place to live, but also with childcare and other essential support services needed for up to 24 months. Our Case Managers work closely with our residents to ensure improvement of both financial and emotional self-sufficiency. Job training and counseling services are also provided by Community Connections. This assistance teaches our residents new skills so that they can secure new and better jobs, and ultimately begin the process of finding permanent housing.
Community Connections is supported in part by U.S. HUD. We serve approximately 300 families each year at three different residential locations - The Florence Davis Center for Women and Children, located in Downtown Jacksonville; Nia Terrace, located on the Westside of Jacksonville; and, The Northeast Florida Housing Program, also located on the Westside of Jacksonville (serving both Jacksonville and Clay County).
We offer several different Children's Services that are available throughout the year. Some of these programs include a Voluntary Pre-K program for 4-year olds, after school programs which offer a plethora of activities including but not limited to: tutorial assistance, computer instruction, homework assistance, Boy Scout/Girl Scout enrichment programs, 4-H clubs and the Jaguars Honor Rows. Community Connections also offers a wide variety of recreational activities for children to do to promote positive and healthy social development. During the summers, we are proud to offer the longest summer camps in Jacksonville! A FULL SUMMER summer camp is available for all children. Approximately 1,100 kids enjoy our programs each year at eight different locations.
In addition to serving Jacksonville's Children, we also assist Parents. Our premiere program is called Healthy Families. Healthy Families is a free and voluntary family support effort that assists families at risk for child abuse or neglect. Working with families in thier own homes, Healthy Families will also accept any family with a newborn living in one of Duval County's targeted zip code areas. Those areas are: 32202, 32204, 32205, 32208, 32209, 32210, 32218, 32219, 32220, 32221, 32226, 32244, and 32254. Community Connections' goal for Healthy Families program is to equip parents with the training and support tools that are necessary for them to become the best examples possible for their children.
Another program designed by Community Connections with parents in mind is the Parents as Teachers program. A city-wide effort, the concept is to educate the parent on the importance of becoming the child's first teacher.
Who I'd like to meet: Community Connections’ volunteers have been enhancing and supporting the lives of the residents by sharing their time and special talents with our families and children.
Volunteer activities include: tutoring, assisting in day care centers and after school programs, coaching and supervising recreational activities and sporting events, assisting children in crafts and special projects, implementing computer training for adults and children, and clerical support.
Community Connections’ volunteers play key roles in providing services to our families and children. Many programs and services would not be a reality without the assistance of our devoted volunteers.
Your role as a volunteer is an important one, and we hope that you will benefit from this experience as much as our families and children. Please let us know if we can further assist you in making your volunteer work more rewarding by contacting the volunteer coordinator at 350-9949.
Thank you for making a positive impact in the lives of Community Connections’ residents.

The Jaycees meet the second Monday of every month. That means TONIGHT is our general meeting for November. All meetings are open to the public. We begin at 7pm, and meet in the front meeting room of the Southeast Branch Library located at 10599 Deerwood Park Blvd. (32256). Our meetings usually last an hour, include a short networking exercise and guest speaker, and are followed by a trip to a nearby restaurant for dinner/drinks/socializing.
Grab a friend and come see what the Jaycees are all about.
We are young motivated people in the Jacksonville area who are willing to make new connections with new people. Friendships, business connections and new opportunities flourish among Jaycees. We make community service easy and fun, we can pad your social calendar, and help satisfy the urge to give back to your community during the holiday season. The Jaycees not only looks great on a resume, we also offer a chance to develop and practice the leadership skills and management experience that will set you apart from other candidates. We are a group of friends with the budget and manpower to get things done- be it organizing an adult soccer team, or having a group for Relay for Life, HabiJax or Paint the Town, or maybe an afternoon bike bar crawl.
For more information about the Jacksonville Chapter of the Junior Chamber, or Jacksonville Jaycees, please visit our website, www. jacksonvilllejaycees. com, email our membership VP, Ashleigh, at membership@jacksonvillejaycees.com, and check out our photo gallery to see us in action.
We all need to take action to make ourselves and our community better. The Jaycees have been doing this all year, and we are always looking for young dedicated individuals that have the drive to Connect, Serve, and Lead.
Jacksonville is the largest Jaycee Chapter in the state of Florida, and we have both the manpower and funds to make our members’ projects successful. Our Relay for Life team earned the recognition of being a Bronze level Fundraiser for our tremendous fund raising efforts, including Kickball for Cancer. In April we joined forces with over 400 Jacksonville area volunteers for Paint the Town during Rehab Week, sponsored by the Jacksonville Housing Authority. Our Get Out the Vote event was not only a great concert, but also registered new voters, updated voters’ registration information, and provided valuable election information. Earlier this month Jaycees lent a hand to HabiJax, the local Habitat for Humanity organization. Throughout November and December we will be busier helping our community than at any other time this year. Between now and the end of December we are running a Pre-Thanksgiving food drive, serving breakfast at the Temple of Jesus Christ Church, raising funds for the Jacksonville Humane Society through our 2nd Annual Pet Stockings project, hosting an Angel Tree, and holding a blanket and coat drive, in addition to the Jacksonville Jaycee’s signature service project: providing a special Christmas to our young friends at the Rodeheaver’s Boys Ranch.
The Jaycees are pros at organizing a group of people in order to make a difference in our community, while also making friends, networking with other young professionals, and having fun. If you are looking to get more involved and active in your community, please consider membership with the Jacksonville Junior Chamber, or more affectionately known as the Jacksonville Jaycees.
