About me: My destiny...to be at one with my soul in a pure and primal way...so read on...
Veteran promoters Joann Jimenez and Benny Soto founded RAZA along with Carmen Valentin as a neo-Latin event in celebration of their Latin heritage.
Who knew it would become the talk of NYC's Latin music and underground dance scene?
RAZA's past guests have included such seasoned performers as Luisito Quintero, Yerba Buena, Bryan Vargas & !Ya Esta!, The Welfare Poets, DJ Afro (Los Amigos Invisibles), Bobbito Garcia, ALMA, among many others. This soiree, the only of it's kind in NYC's fashionable meat-packing district, has also hosted the 'still-talked-about' Fania record release party for the late-great Hector Lavoe with his nephew, Grammy Award-winning DJ/Producer "Little" Louie Vega at the helm.
From the onset of their first event in October 2006, the music featured at this afterwork affair has fused all types of Latin rhythms, with an emphasis on roots, and in a way that's created a unique sound. The energy created at RAZA is simply contagious.
RAZA events integrate a veritable feast for the ears...eyes...the soul-as can be seen in the work that they put into their line-ups.
A typical night at RAZA may begin with a dance class (among those featured have been a salsa lesson with Rodney Lopez of "Mad Hot Ballroom" fame and a bomba class); live music sets; spoken word; films/documentaries; DJ sets- all strategically planned throughout the affair.
Also featured at RAZA has been live art by one of New York's more prolific and talked-about artists, Derek Santiago. Derek Santiago is responsible for RAZA's logo as well as the art work on all of RAZA's flyers which , most would agree, have become collectibles.
In the spirit of globalization, it is RAZA's goal to continue to integrate the many nations that comprise the Latino population in NY...along with the various musical genres that they bring into La Gran Manzana...stay soulful,
Carmen
