Bio
Deb Whalen is a singer- songwriter who's sound is as much a product of the cabaret as it is the coffee house, weaving smoky blues and jazz into her original folk tunes. The enticing combination of her sultry voice with 20 years of guitar playing results in torch songs that take no prisoners. -
Members
Deb Whalen is also often accompanied by any combination of Dan Gouge on bass, Graham Hudson on lead guitar and/or Minas H. on Djembe. -
Influences
My Dad, the deaf guy with the best record collection I ever saw. Plus everyone needs someone to harass them into practicing the guitar between lessons* Adam Duritz and the Counting Crows, who made me feel lyrics for the first time* J.S. Bach and his ideas about what talent really is* Alanis Morissette, who taught me to be honest and then write it down and then say it out loud* Ani DiFranco, who removed my guilt for swearing when I sing. Oh. And also for being a woman who knew what she was doing* Aimee Mann, the verbage weilding maverick who inspires entire films one line at a time* John Mayer, for making me look at my guitar like a new creature* Amy Millan and Feist: Local girls who went pro on account of the beauty they produce, and have great fun doing it* Duke Special, Patrick Watson and Sarah Slean: my piano-driving vaudvillain heroes* Romance and it's ability to bolster and break my heart* .. .. .. Sounds Like
Bits of my influences at a dinner party which has more guests than chairs and is retiring to a candle-light-bathed living room, opening another bottle of wine, passing around the whisky and unwrapping more chocolate.
