LISA CHENEY (b. 1987) is a Contemporary-Classical Australian composer and pianist. Born in Sydney, Cheney grew up in Queensland where she graduated from a Bachelor of Music in Composition at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in 2008. Having studied with composers’ Gerard Brophy, Stephen Cronin and Ralph Hultgren.
The recipient of many awards, Cheney is a fast emerging presence on the Queensland composition scene and a co-founder of the SOUNDING OUT Composer’s Collective Series successfully launched in 2008. Accolades include the ‘Betty Beath Most Promising Award’ (2004), First prize in the MTAQ Gold Coast Composer’s Competition (2005, 2006, 2007), Third prize in the Open section of the ASME Young Composer’s Competition (2008), First prize at the Key’s Festival for Australian Music (2006) with her vocal and piano work ‘Lullaby’ and the Griffith University Owen Fletcher Postgraduate Award (2008).
Cheney’s recent works span a diverse range of genres including solo and large scale works for the Concert Hall, Children’s Theatre, Animation and Short Film, Electro-Acoustic collaborations. Her musical influences are as varied, however many of her works explore the boundaries of tonality, often with the hint of jazz influences. Cheney constantly works toward effective communication and heartfelt expression between her compositions and audiences, often through emotive, lyrical melodies and colourful timbral explorations. Premieres in 2008 included a commission for The Southern Cross Soloists ‘Music and Words Series’, ‘Black on White’ for concert pianist Philip Eames and Chamber Orchestra commission ‘Life Suite’ for at the SOUNDING OUT Composers’ Collective Series. In an exciting 2009, Cheney will premiere commissions with The Menard Ensemble, SOUNDING OUT Composers’ Collective, The 10Divas and The Australia Ballet’s Body Torque 2.2 Season.
In her spare time Cheney enjoys playing and teaching piano, singing in Brisbane based choirs, travelling, reading fiction novels and enjoying the beauty of nature.
