About me:
SOMETHING MAGICAL happened back in 2004 when Mike and Sarah set up Concrete, made their way to Glastonbury for the festival’s inaugural Emerging Talent competition final, and get stuck in God damn traffic on the way back only to become inspired to produce a compilation of all the finalists. The team at Glasto was hugely supportive, The Subways were overall winners and as their fist release the double CD sold like hotcakes at the festie and beyond, giving those unknown bands a bit of attention and making a few quid for The Fair Trade Foundation too. The Late Great John Peel paid us a visit on what was to become his last Glastonbury and for that we are forever blessed. At the same time something was a-brewing a little closer to home. From the coolest corners of our very own City Ten From Ten was in conception. The creator - Steve Adj, ex Tour Manager with The Stone Roses and well-known face of Manchester. The formula - ten new bands performing ten of the city’s classics all wrapped up with some John Squire artwork on the sleeve. Names such as Cherry Ghost’s Simon Aldred, Ten Bear’s Sam Hammond, and Magic Arm’s Mark Riglesford all appear in their earlier guises on this album. Released later that September on CD and numbered vinyl it was a collector’s dream. So then came Glastonbury again: the double compilation was this time in aid of Shelter, and was even more diverse with an opener from Scouting For Girls (Keep on Walking), a beautiful and haunting song from Palestinian born Reem Kelani and tracks from nu-folk find Jim Moray and indie-jazz artist Paddy Milner. Our on-site location now included a venue with Oxfam called Late N Live which to brought the best of new music well into the wee small hours with sets from the likes of The Subways, Blackbud, Autokat, an early version of Brute Chorus as Low Sparks, The KBC, a solo set from Roy Stride and from one-man band Dennis Hopper Choppers. Overall winners of the competition were Ten Bears in their earlier incarnation of The Deadbeats, who graced The Other and The Acoustic stages as well as our own with their country rocking charm. So 3 albums down the line a single was born. It seemed fitting that this should be from The Manchester based Deadbeats and true to Concrete foundations the Back Door Honey video saw wrecking ball fun. In 2007 Late N Live was run in association with Sustrans and our good friends at Kro when Scouting for Girls, The Courteeners, The Whip, Gravenhurst, Liz Green, The Epstein, Courtina Deluxx and the Mighty Liam Frost graced the stage. By then a 3-piece known as Orphan Boy had signed to Concrete following their move from coastal Cleethorpes. The first single Trophies of Love was hailed on air by Steve Lamacq as ‘the most played song on my ipod’ and later Shop Local was to become his alternative album of the week as well as BBC Introducing’s Huw Stevens album of the week. By then various radio sessions including with XFM’s John Kennedy had taken place as well as support from Zane Lowe on his BBC Radio 1 and MTV2 Gonzo shows. Hotly topped by The Fly, NME, Rocksound, the BBC Collective and the Manchester Evening News Orphan Boy continue to create a riot wherever they go. By 2008 the reputation for wonderful and varied new music, the fine food and friendly folk meant that Late N Live had become something of a haven for those seeking a little comfort and for party-animals alike. There were too many incredible acts to mention this year but we can try to name a few. We had overall Glastonbury Emerging Talent competition winners The Travelling Band and Golden Silvers, headlining Thursday night’s opening party were AutoKratz, an impromptu floor filling performance from Radio 1 Beatbox champion and Channel 4 Talent Award Winner The PeteBox, feisty Fight Like Apes, Rook and the Ravens, Light Syndicate, Karima Francis, Bone-Box, Nacional, Jake Flowers and Danny and co really proved they were The Champions of The whole damn World. Thanks to all of you who came and found us, danced by the flashing cow and took home something new. X

Review from 'The Fly'
‘Alderley Edge’
(CONCRETE RECORDINGS)
Yep – we’ve shit ourselves. At least, that’s what happened when The Fly saw this lot playing live. Was it booze, or just a loose bowel problem? Actually neither, because hearing Orphanboy on record is equally as brilliantly scary as we witnessed. Watch this lot VERRRY closely. They should be huge.
