Interests

  • General

    ..Getting a fair shake.
  • Music

Instead of just listing artists I like (Carrie Underwood! Whooo!), I thought I'd share what I consider some of the few near-perfect songs I've heard. By that I mean: the song has a central theme, a point it's trying to get across; it sticks to that theme throughout; the melody and arrangement suit the song; and the artist sings it well. These are in no particular order:
    • "Stand By Me" - Ben E. King
    • "Stupid Boy" - Keith Urban
    • "Absolutely (Story of a Girl)" - Nine Days
    • "Loved Too Much" - Ty Herndon
    • "Bless the Broken Road" - Rascal Flatts
    • "You Give Me Love" - Faith Hill
    • "Something to Talk About" - Bonnie Raitt
    • "Desperado" - The Eagles
    • Movies

      This is roughly in order:
      1. "Good Will Hunting"
      2. "The Incredibles"
      3. The "Bourne" series
      4. The "Harry Potter" series
      5. All the "Star Wars" movies
      6. "Enemy of the State"
      7. "Black Hawk Down"
      8. The "Back to the Future" trilogy
      9. "Legally Blonde"
      10. "Enchanted"
    • Television

      Favorite Television Shows (fiction)
      1. "The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr." (1994-95)
      2. The first 3 seasons of " Gilmore Girls" (2000-03) - until Rory became a slut
      3. "The West Wing" (1999-2006) - but I only really got into it in the last two seasons
      4. "Mad About You" (1992-99)
      5. "The O.C." until the lesbo kiss (2003-05)
      6. "Darkwing Duck" (1991-95)
      7. "The Tomorrow People" (1992-95)
      8. "Get Smart" (1965-70)
      9. "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" (1996) - it'd probably be higher if it aired more than nine episodes
"The Simpsons" is kind of its own category, and "American Idol" deserves a mention, too. "24" should be on there somewhere, though its seasons are hit or miss.
    • Books

Books I Enjoyed Recently (other than the Bible)
      • "The War Within," Bob Woodward
      • "The Chronicles of Narnia," C.S. Lewis--I've read books 1 through 4 so far
      • "State of Emergency," Patrick J. Buchanan
      • "Mere Christianity," C.S. Lewis--brilliant man
      • "Team of Rivals," Doris Kearns Goodwin--I got through the first 500 pages and quit
      • "1776," David McCullough
      • "America Alone," Mark Steyn
      • "State of Denial," Bob Woodward
      • "A Mormon in the White House?" Hugh Hewitt
      • "Crazies to the Left of Me, Wimps to the Right," Bernard Goldberg
      • "The World Is Flat," Thomas Friedman
      • "Fiasco," Thomas Ricks
      • "Godless," Ann Coulter
      • "Freakonomics," Steven Leavitt & Stephen Dubner
      • "An Inconvenient Truth," Al Gore
      • "A Matter of Interpretation," Antonin Scalia
      • "Active Liberty," Stephen Breyer
I have read the first three chapters of "Shattered Consensus," which is about the faulty science of global warming. Each chapter is by a different author or two. It's almost a science textbook. It's dense, but that's the idea. It's not just a book about what other people said.
    • Heroes

..The guys in the Infantry. I might be in the Army, but they're in the "real Army." (And they'll let you know it, too.)

    Blurbs

    About me:

I got a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from Northeastern University ($30,000-a-year tuition, thank you very much) in May, 2007; graduated with a 3.35 GPA; and then threw it all away to join the Army eleven days later.

    Who I'd like to meet:

There's no celebrity that's impressed me that much. All the politicians have had their life handed to them on a silver platter. I'd like to meet someone who started off as nothing in a lower-class family and became famous but didn't lose sight of what's important. Is there anyone?
