"BAKED BROILED & FRIED' THE FIRST EVER COOKIN' ON 3 BURNERS LP and CD RELEASED WORLDWIDE on FREESTYLE(UK) and KNOWFOOWL(Aus/NZ)OUT NOW !!!!!
Cookin On 3 Burners are Jake Mason, Ivan Khatchoyan and Lance Ferguson, a three piece powerhouse who serve up the rawest in deep funk, jazz, boogaloo and soul. Led by a wailing Hammond Organ, they are distinctly different to many other funk acts, yet you’ll be no stranger to the grooves and pounding drums .
After a number of Melbourne residencies and a self released 7”, the group came to local prominence with the ‘Cressy St Breakdown’ 12” released on Knowfoowl thru USA’s Groove Distribution. This was followed by the re-release of ‘Gravel Rash’ through UK’s Freestyle label and then a follow up 7” ‘Keb’s Bucket’ (an ode to the Scottish DJ’s legendary pee bucket he needs when he plays for many hours). The group have continued to play across Sydney and Melbourne over the last 12 months, with highlight gigs including the support for Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings 06 Sydney show, support for Breakestra’s Music Man Miles DJ show in Melbourne and a mammoth 3 gigs in under 24 hours over the 07 ANZAC day holiday in Sydney.
Cookin On 3 Burners are Australias foremost organ trio joining the dots between funk, soul, boogaloo & jazz. Long time partners Lance Ferguson (guitar), Ivan Khatchoyan (drums) and Jake Mason (organ) have taken their home brew of soulful Hammond get down everywhere from national jazz festivals to after hours bars and clubs. With their releases receiving acclaim from international DJs, jazz critics and fans alike, Cookin on 3 Burners continue to deliver upfront musical dishes with a down home flavour fresh sounds to make you shake your peas and gravy.

Cookin' On 3 Burners - Baked, Broiled and Fried

8/10
Melbourne-based jazz/funk/soul trio Cookin’ On 3 Burners have already cultivated a serious local following thanks to prestigious support slots with the likes of Breakestra and Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, and this debut artist album on Knowfoowl arrives hot on the heels of recent 7 Inch Cressy St. Breakdown.
When I first stuck Baked… in my player, I thought for a moment that I’d been sent a vintage Stax/Motown release by mistake, an effect I imagine the Cookin’ boys have spent meticulous effort pursuing, with an undeniably warm vinyl quality present throughout all 13 tracks here. As for the music itself, the tracks here manage to navigate a broad range of territory ranging from upbeat JBs-esque grooves and sensuous jazz-exotica, whilst deftly avoiding falling into the dreaded coffee-table-soundtrack trap. The aforementioned attribute is something that’s partially down to the mighty bass and drum grooves that power this collection, in a manner reminiscent of labelmate Rephrase’s recent excellent follow-up given a decidedly more live edge. It’s also equally a result of the deliberately rough edges kept in the mix, as an inspired live band reworking of Gorillaz’ Feel Good Inc illustrates. Extremely classy.
Baked Broiled & Fried is one of the strongest rootsy funk albums to ever come from Australia. The band’s ability to switch between Meters-esque funk head nodders, to more complicated Boogaloo and swing tempos sets them apart from the straight funk scene. Teaming up with vocalists Fallon Williams and Kylie Auldist, the band cast their net even further across the soul spectrum.
2007 sees Cookin' On 3 Burners at their most ambitious. With the worldwide release of their new album ´Baked, Broiled and Fried´ the band have included vocalists and look set to dominate the funk-soul spectrum once again. On this brand new single we find Fallon Williams (ex Humble Pie drummer!) laying down some tough vocals on "Cook It" whilst Melbourne's best kept secret Kylie Auldist gets deep on "Settle The Score".
Been waiting for a while for a new Cookin' on 3 Burners release, and they don't dissappoint. Still on the button and tighter than a mosquito's tweeter. Watch out Quantic Soul Orchestra, the Burners are back!

Following their hugely popular (and increasingly rare!) singles on Bamboo Shack, alongside the re-issue of 'Gravel Rash' on Freestyle last year, Melbournes funkiest trio step up once again with another straight up groover. Keb's Bucket. Comprising of members of Tru-Thoughts signing The Bamboos, the Cookin' On 3 Burners sound is a rawer, more stripped back style reminiscent of the late Jimmy Smith, Richard 'Groove' Holmes and Jimmy McGriff at their fiercest.

Review :
This is some heavy heavy monster piece of wax!!
In the foosteps of their recent available vinyl releases in Europe - a fried 7 inch on Freestyle Records and a killer 12 inch on Knowfool Music -, Australian Hammond-Power-Funk group Cookin' On 3 Burners hit the dancefloor jackpot once again with a new 7 inch on Freestyle.
"Keb's Bucket" is indeed EXACTLY what over-polluted-with-electro-pop-clones clubs need today. Its undeniable back-to-basis approach to in-your-face raw funk is spiced up with modern sound structure action and athletic breaks, and would get all the laziest party-goers up and dancing.
The b-side "Redback" is in a Quantic Soul Orchestra deep funk kind of vibe, with a cool call-and-response interplay between the Hammond and guitar, making this 45 and essential release for all funk DJs and collectors. Djouls
COOKIN' ON 3 BURNERS
Keb's Bucket FSR7022
'Keb's Bucket' is an ode to a certain deep funk DJ's overflowing receptacle of...well - who knows what? Whatever he keeps in there it's creating a lot of steam as this track slashes the dancefloor with its strutting bass and hammond interplay spilling over the tight drums. Over on the flip 'Redback' provides more of the same but with a more laid back Grant Green sort of vibe. More essential funk for your trunk from Freestyle!'
