Don't Miss the Blue Vision Summit
www.bluefront.org/bluevision
March 7, 2009 - March 10, 2009 in Washington, DC
Join people from across the country engaged in ocean conservation and its sustainable use as we educate our leaders and each other about the state of our public seas, coasts and watersheds, and the human and wildlife communities that depend on them. This Summit will demonstrate to policy makers the strong and diverse constituency ready to work for ocean and coastal protection and restoration. It will also build a nationwide network of ocean activists ready to act at the local level to assure passage of effective ocean legislation and encourage good administrative and agency policies they support.
The Summit will include a night with top Ocean Explorers, two days of meetings and discussions, two evening celebrations and a Capitol Hill Day that will provide an opportunity for people to meet with their elected representatives.

The Campaign For Healthy Oceans
The increasing industrialization of our oceans threatens the fragile health of marine ecosystems. If poorly planned or managed, drilling for oil and natural gas in federal waters, developing aquaculture and building wind, wave and tidal energy facilities all have the potential to damage America’s marine environment. Currently, several federal agencies manage industrial activities in our oceans under a number of statutes, and there is little coordination or consideration of the cumulative impacts their decisions have on the health and productivity of marine ecosystems and coastal communities.
The Campaign for Healthy Oceans is working with Congress and the new Administration to:
- Establish a national policy to protect, maintain and restore the health of marine ecosystems;
- Provide a guaranteed, steady source of funding for ocean and coastal conservation and management in order to implement the new policy; and
- Ensure it is carried out by the federal government and, to the extent possible, by the states, through comprehensive, science-based and precautionary management of marine resources.
Oceans sustain our coastal economies, but more importantly they are essential to the health of the planet’s air and water systems. The Campaign for Healthy Oceans seeks the changes needed to restore and protect this vital part of our natural environment.
Federal Fisheries Policy Reform Project
America’s oceans are in trouble and need our help. Pollution, habitat destruction, mismanagement and overfishing have impoverished our ocean resources. Thus, the nation’s fisheries have been declining precipitously for decades, with more than 90 percent of the world’s large predatory fish, including tuna, swordfish and marlin disappearing from our oceans.
The Federal Fisheries Policy Reform Project calls upon the National Marine Fisheries Service to develop and implement policies, regulations, and fishery management plans designed to eliminate overfishing and protect the marine environment. It works with scientists, fishermen, policy makers, regional fishery managers and conservation organizations throughout the country.
