COOL FROG started in Cerdanyola de Vallès midway through 1995. Gerard and Vicenç had played together in the Speakers. Gerard on the guitar and Vicenç beating the drums. The group stayed together a couple of years but apart from a few a gigs they never made a cent – not surprising in their case. When the group broke up they still had the urge to try again, starting from scratch.
They knew a guitarist, famous for his hairstyle, Sergio Guàrdia or “Poly”, who might fit the bill. They made him an offer which he accepted – “I love playing with you guys because you’re crazy”.
Gerard changed to bass and vocals. Poly “I love playing with you guys because you’re crazy” on the guitar and occasionally vocals. And Vicenç kept banging away on the drums.
Rehearsals began in Poly’s mum’s garage, just like all the great bands, doing covers of some top acts: Parchís, Teresa Rabal, Enrique y Ana, etc. And then they developed their own ideas, giving them form and turning them into candidates for summer hits. The aim at that stage was to find similarities in their tastes and choose surfing baggies that would fit the part. Each of them had their own influences, but where they coincided and clicked was playing something along the lines of Power-Pop with a twist of Punk, with many influences from groups of the 60s and 70s. They found beach baggies but never agreed on whether they should wear thongs or sandals with matching socks.
The name came a year later. At first they called themselves “8” but nobody really bought it as whilst a trio of 8 was original, it caused confusion. Time out for thinking with brain storming included. Would it be better to look for 5 more band members and stick with “8” or change the name? In the end logic prevailed and advertisements were placed to find the missing band members. Three months later, having received no replies, they opted to change the name and the band was faced a serious identity crisis. Gerard thought he was a Braun Blender, Vicenç a Feber tricycle and Poly “I love playing with you because you’re a duo” bought a Barriguitas doll. After some intense group therapy they began to shuffle around some new names for the three man trio. They dealt out and played a hand of Brisca, dealing out three cards because there were three little pigs and none of them was Paul Weller. Three! Not one, not two, but three names appeared on the table after our unfortunate friends cleared some grey mucous from their noises. After blowing their noises the names of Midfield Granny, Nigerian Army Chorus & Orchestra, and Stinking Zoo were placed on the table. After a general meeting of the Saint Cucufato choir scholars, a presentation on the semantics of the names for bands in Uzbekistan given by Professor Soila Baka Delkorral, and a desk overloaded by the weight of the nonsense that was discussed, COOL FROG was chosen.
Such was the joy on restoring their identity that they immediately recorded a demo with 3 and a half tracks that Poly “I love playing with you guys because it turns me on” pulled out of nowhere, with the aim of finding gigs and making ourselves known. The demo was called “Cool Frog”, the sound was terrible, and the only thing that was worthwhile was the photo on the cover.
In 1997 they tried again in a friend’s house. An isolated house in Montflorit surrounded by nettle and cotton thistles, and guarded by a friendly rottweiller called Pip that must have been the only one in the place that didn’t know his name because he wouldn’t even obey Steve Irwin.
This time in a pseudo-professional manner using an 8-track, and with the help of Luis, the name of the poor friend who’d agreed to record the trio, COOL FROG at least sounded good. They recorded 6 tracks, the disc was called “Toilette”, and with this they began to make a move.
They were almost sick from moving about so much and they decided to take a break to record again. They called Luis, but as Pip had eaten the telephone line they had to pay him a visit in person much to the delight of Pip and the thistles. Luis agreed to record them again after he was offered the opportunity to join them on a world tour if the band was a hit, but the only thing he saw was Poly’s mum’s garage, which is where the whole team moved, except for Pip and the thistles, to record “Atemporal Music”. This was 1999.
In 2000, after an explosive New Year’s Eve performance with Miguel Bosé covers, they decided to record again. This time at Infusiones Musicales, a studio in El Masnou managed by Jordi “Black Africa” Corch, chiromancer and voodoo master who does four hours of stretching a day in a session of the Holy Inquisition. A visionary that believed in the band from the very first moment and he worked and reworked the recording of “Zoom”. It was reworked so often that the zoom was reduced to 3x and Jordi lost his faith in black magic and switched to car tuning.
The band enjoyed the experience at Infusiones Musicales and decided to do it again the following year. The result was a good disk called “COOL FROG”, and suffering repeated sunstroke from too much sunbathing on the beaches of El Masnou. Jordi “Somalia is different” Corch was so happy with his work that in a fit of self-satisfaction, he had to attend group therapy for uncontrollable compulsive masturbators.
This album led the group to make a series of performances in variety and dog shows with varying results. They didn’t win any, off course, but Gerard almost made it to the final for “prison dogs with fleas”. These performances allowed them to appear on TV, participate in festivals and get gigs with more professional conditions – no turning the lights out or cutting the volume.
They are now involved in a new project that is much more ambitious – playing well.

Esto de COOL FROG empezó en Cerdanyola del Vallès a mediados de 1995. Gerard y Vicenç habían estado en los Speakers. Gerard rascando la guitarra y Vicenç aporreando la batería. Funcionó un par de años pero a parte de algunos bolos no se comieron un pito - nada raro tratándose de ellos -. Cuando se disolvió el grupo se quedaron con el gusanillo de intentarlo de nuevo empezando de cero.
Conocían a un guitarrista, famoso por sus peinados, Sergio Guàrdia alias “Poly”, que podía encajar en el asunto. Así que se lo propusieron y él aceptó –“me gusta tocar con vosotros porque estáis locos”-.
Gerard se pasó al bajo y a la voz. Poly “me gusta tocar con vosotros porque estáis locos” a la guitarra y a veces a la voz. Y Vicenç, para no variar, siguió en la batería.
Empezaron los ensayos en el garaje de Poly’s mum como empiezan todas las grandes bandas, versionando a los mejores: Parchís, Teresa Rabal, Enrique y Ana, etc. Y luego desarrollaron sus propias ideas, dándoles forma y perfilándolas como proyectos de canción del verano. La cuestión en aquellos días era encontrar coincidencias en sus gustos y escoger bermudas surferas que les quedaran bien. Cada uno tenía sus propias influencias, pero donde coincidían y se entendían era tocando algo así como un Power-Pop a veces algo Punk, pero con muchas influencias de grupos de los 60 y 70. Encontraron bermudas pero nunca se pusieron de acuerdo en si debían llevar chanclas o sandalias con los calcetines a juego.
Lo del nombre ocurrió al cabo de un año. Al principio se hicieron llamar “8” pero nadie estaba muy convencido ya que un trío de 8 era original pero daba lugar a confusiones. Hubo un período de reflexión con Brain-Storming incluido. Se dudó entre buscar los cinco componentes que faltaban para seguir llamándose 8, o cambiar el nombre. Finalmente se impuso la lógica vulcaniana y se pusieron anuncios para encontrar los componentes restantes. Al cabo de tres meses y ninguna respuesta se optó por el cambio de nombre sumiendo a la banda en una profunda crisis de identidad. Gerard creyó ser una Braun Minipimer, Vicenç un triciclo de Feber y Poly “me gusta tocar con vosotros porque sois dos” se compró una Barriguitas. Después de una intensa terapia de grupo se comenzaron a barajar los nuevos nombres del trío de tres. Se repartieron y jugaron una partida de brisca donde se reparten tres porque tres eran tres las hijas de Elena y ninguna era Paul Weller. Tres. Ni uno ni dos, sino tres, fueron los nombres que inicialmente salieron a colación después de un derrame de materia gris por las narices de nuestros desventurados amigos. Una vez se sonaron los mocos los nombres de Midfield Granny, Nigerian Army Chorus & Orchestra, y Stinking Zoo se pusieron sobre la mesa. Tras una asamblea general en la escolanía de San Cucufato, una ponencia sobre la semántica de los nombres de los grupos musicales en Uzbekistán a cargo de la profesora Soila Baka Delkorral, y una mesa hundida por el peso de las sandeces que se llegaron a debatir, se decidió escoger COOL FROG.
Tal fue el jolgorio por recuperar la identidad que grabaron de inmediato una demo con un 3 pistas y media que Poly “me gusta tocar con vosotros porque me la pone dura” substrajo de vete a saber qué rastro, con la intención de buscar bolos y darse a conocer. La demo se llamó “Cool Frog”, el sonido era espantoso, y lo único aprovechable fue la foto de la portada.
En 1997 lo volvieron a intentar en casa de un colega. Una casa perdida en Montflorit rodeada de ortigas y cardos borriqueros, y protegida por un amistoso Rod-Weiller llamado Pipo que debía ser el único en el lugar que no conocía su nombre porque no hacía caso ni a Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente.
Esta vez fue de un modo pseudo-profesional utilizando un 8 pistas, y Luis –que así se llama el pobre colega que accedió a grabar al trío - consiguió que COOL FROG al menos sonara bien. Se grabaron 6 temas, la maqueta se llamó “Toilette”, y con ella empezaron a moverse.
De tanto moverse casi se marean y decidieron parar un momento para volver a grabar. Llamaron a Luis pero como Pipo se había comido la línea telefónica tuvieron que visitarlo en persona para solaz de Pipo y las ortigas. Luis aceptó a grabar de nuevo después de que se le ofreciera la posibilidad de ver mundo con la banda si ésta tenía éxito, pero lo único que visitó fue el garaje de Poly’s mum porque allí es donde se trasladó todo el equipo –sin Pipo y sin las ortigas- para la grabación de “Atemporal Music”. Corría el año 1999.
En el 2000, y después de una soberbia actuación de Fin de Año versionando a Miguel Bosé, decidieron grabar de nuevo. Esta vez en Infusiones Musicales, un estudio de El Masnou regentado por Jordi “Black Africa” Corch, quiromántico y maestro vudú que hace estiramientos cuatro horas al día en un torno de la Santa Inquisición. Un visionario que creyó desde el primer momento en la banda y se volcó y revolcó en la grabación de “Zoom”. Tantos fueron los revolcones que el zoom fue sólo de 3 aumentos y Jordi perdió la fe en la magia negra y se pasó al tunning.
La experiencia en Infusiones Musicales fue del agrado de la banda, y decidieron repetir al año siguiente. Y el resultado fue una buena maqueta que se llamó “COOL FROG”, y una serie de insolaciones por sobre-exposición en las playas de El Masnou. Jordi “Somalia is diferent” Corch quedó tan satisfecho con su trabajo que víctima de un ataque de autocomplacencia, tuvo que asistir a una terapia de grupo para onanistas compulsivos y fuera de control.
Esta maqueta condujo al grupo a una serie de actuaciones en concursos musicales y caninos con diferentes resultados. No ganaron en ninguno, claro, aunque Gerard estuvo a punto de entrar en la final para “perros de presa con malas pulgas”. Estas actuaciones les permitieron aparecer en TV, participar en festivales y conseguir bolos en condiciones más profesionales – no les apagaban las luces ni les bajaban el volumen-.
Actualmente están inmersos en un nuevo proyecto mucho más ambicioso. Tocar bien.
