About me:
COOLING THE TOWERS is our project to turn the disused cooling towers next to Meadowhall, Sheffield into new symbols for the city.

At the moment, the towers are landmarks. But they represent what Sheffield was: grey, dead, post-industrial. We want to reuse them, turn them into a massive work of public art, so they represent what Sheffield IS: creative, green, friendly.

They could be our icon. They could change the way people think about our city. They could be heroes.

Hello.

As you're probably aware, Eon are preparing to demolish the towers. This is despite all the work that everyone has done on trying to convince them that the towers should be reused as spaces for public art. This is a bit of a tragedy in our opinion, and a massive waste.

Someone quipped recently that Sheffield never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity. We think they're spot on.

It doesn't appear that there's much we can do. Eon are adamant that the towers have to come down, and have been unwilling to consider anything else all along. Nothing that we have done has changed that. The council haven't got the ambition or vision to see that these towers could be icons, that they could attract millions of people. Unless there's some sort of divine intervention, then, it looks like the cooling towers will disappear.

However, our efforts haven't been entirely in vain. Eon have stumped up £500 000 for a replacement piece of art on the site, thanks to people like you pestering them, signing petitions, and getting involved. We've been thinking long and hard about whether we can be involved in the process of coming up with a replacement piece of art. But the thought of Eon and the City Council coming up with art on their own (a massive steel fork? a massive steel football?) is quite frankly terrifying.

We're willing to work with Eon and the Council, on the conditions listed in our blog above. Have a look.

We've given Eon the opportunity to work together on something positive and amazing for the city. We'll now wait to see if they take that chance.

Thanks. We'll miss the towers very much. We wish Sheffield could do something amazing, for once. But we will see.

Demolition date set for M1 towers

Sheffield's famous Tinsley cooling towers will be demolished over the August Bank Holiday weekend, energy giant E. On has announced.

Thousands of people had signed petitions to save the towers, which can be seen by motorists who use the M1.

But E. ON, the company that owns the towers, has said they need to be demolished as they are unsafe.

The motorway will be closed while the 250ft (76m) towers are brought down in the early hours of Sunday 24 August.

E. On said the timings of the controlled explosion were decided after "extensive consultation" with the Highways Agency and police.

The M1 will be closed between junctions 32 and 35 from midnight on Saturday and for much of the Sunday.

Viewing platform

Derek Parkin, from E. On, said: "Our priority has always been to make sure this demolition is carried out safely and with as little disruption as possible, which is why we've opted for the early hours of the morning."

The Tinsley cooling towers were originally part of Blackburn Meadows Power Station which closed down in the 1970s.

Earlier this year Sheffield City Council gave E. On planning permission to develop a £60m biomass power station on the site, which would produce enough renewable energy to serve the needs of 40,000 homes.

E. On said a viewing platform would be set up so people could watch the towers being demolished.

There will also be a competition to win the chance to start the demolition countdown.

E. On is also funding a souvenir book of the life of the station, and a collection of postcards based on historical images of the site.

Funds raised from the sale of these will be donated to The Rotherham Hospice and neurocare at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

For the first in our Ugly Beautiful series Lucy Siegle visited Sheffield's Tinsley Cooling Towers.

Built in the 1930s to help power the city’s famous steel industry, the Tinsley Cooling Towers stand 250 feet high - casting a very large shadow over the nearby M1. The two towers are what remains of the old coal-fired Blackburn Meadows Power Station, which closed in the 1970s.

They're due for demolition but as Lucy discovers, not everyone will be glad to see them disappear from the Sheffield skyline.

German engineer Jan Marfo is a fan of Tinsley Cooling Towers. He has started a campaign to save them.

Jan claims they are proud, iconic landmarks - a worthy reminder of the city's past - and as such, should be celebrated and preserved.

Local resident Barry Cummings is in favour of a demolition job. He's lived in the shadow of the towers all his life and thinks them ugly, banal and dreadful. To him they’re a redundant industrial leftover, indicative of an era when Sheffield was sulphurous and smoggy and generally a pretty awful place to live before smoke control acts came in.

E. ON welcomes approval for new biomass power station in Sheffield
E. ON, one of the UK's leading green generators, has today (TUESDAY) welcomed approval from Sheffield City Council to build a new renewable energy plant at Blackburn Meadows in Sheffield.
The news means that construction at the site of the former coal-fired power station could start as early as next year, with full commercial operation expected in 2011.

The new power station will be rated at around 25MW and will produce enough power for approximately 40,000 homes by burning recycled wood in the state-of-the-art facility.

Dave Rogers, E. ON's Regional Director for Climate & Renewables, said: "We're delighted that the City Council has given us the green light to develop this project.

"Biomass power stations offer us an exciting opportunity to help combat climate change by using ‘carbon neutral' products in the place of traditional fossil fuels to generate electricity - further proof of our commitment to changing energy in the UK."

The plant will displace the emission of around 80,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, the equivalent of taking more than 20,000 cars off the UK's roads each year, by burning recycled wood in place of traditional fossil fuels like coal and gas.

Blackburn Meadows is the second of E. ON's biomass developments in the UK, with Steven's Croft near Lockerbie in Scotland one of the UK's largest dedicated biomass power stations.

UNDERCLASSRISING

We came to Sheffield,

Because we thought post-industrial banality was cool, now we’re way too cool for Sheffield. Read On..

Who needs Sheffield when you’ve got Saatchi & Saatchi. Charles loved the way we wanted to gentrify some naff old Cooling Towers in the name of art; he thought that it would make the perfect ‘cum shot’ for his high profile rape of working class culture. But alas our ideas proved too visionary for you South Yorkshire folk and we were forced to find a creative outlet at the top the dizzying artistic heights of the advertising world.

The so called ‘creative industries’ represent the vanguard of global consumer capitalism. Advertising, movies, pop tunes, i Phones, virals, pod casts, CGI, computer games consoles, HD ready tele-fucking-vision; all of this ‘creativity’ amounts to nothing more than a clever distraction; a sleight of hand to keep people passive while their lives are stolen from them in the name of profit and progress.

The cleverest trick of all is that those who work in the creative industries actually believe that they’re doing humanity a service, they’re like the Victorian gentleman who beats his wife and children ‘for their own good’ – talk about the blind leading the blind.

The most ironic moment for post-modern culture came with the release of the 1999 science fiction film, The Matrix.

The story was an allegory, a wonderful metaphor for consumer society, with a message that said ‘you’re being robbed of your lives by a mega-machine that offers entertainment in place of existence’.

Movie goers nodded in agreement and then paid the producers $460 million worldwide for the ‘pleasure’ of being entertained – you really couldn’t make this shit up! Post-modern, consumerist ‘Art’ fairs no better; where the avant-garde once sought to awaken society with satire and debate, Art Inc. seeks to placate the hoi polloi with gimmicks and fads.

The Saatchi Gallery even runs an X-Factor type competition on th

Energy giant E. On has submitted plans to build a "green" power station on the site of Sheffield's famous Tinsley Towers after they are demolished.
The biomass facility would be developed at Blackburn Meadows next to the M1 at a cost of £60m.

The renewable energy plant would produce enough power for about 40,000 homes by burning recycled wood and crops like willow and elephant grass.

If the scheme is approved, construction is expected to start early in 2009.

The first power would be produced in 2011.

No date has yet been set for the demolition of the 250ft (76m) cooling towers.

Summer demolition expected for Tinsley towers - 04/02/2008

The Tinsley Towers are expected to be demolished sometime this summer following discussions between E.ON and the Highways Agency.

Mark Maisey, property manager at E.On, said a specific date had not yet been set.

"We've been working with a number of technical specialists on getting the final approvals finalised for demolition and now we're looking to pin down a date that best suits everybody."

He said that the size of the project meant it was taking time to organise but he hoped a date would be decided soon.

Built between 1937 and 1942, there are two out of seven cooling towers that remain on the site.

In place of the towers, E.ON plans to build a £60 million biomass power station that will generate enough electricity for about 40,000 homes.

The power station would burn a combination of recycled wood and specially grown crops on the 30-acre site.

E.ON UK Press Releases

01 February 2008 16:00

Preparations ongoing for demolition of the Tinsley cooling towers
Plans to bring down the Tinsley Towers are ongoing, with discussions continuing between E.ON UK, the Highways Agency, and other interested parties in preparation for an expected spring/summer demolition.
Mark Maisey, E.ON UK Property Manager, said: "We've been working with a number of technical specialists on getting the final approvals finalised for demolition and now we're looking to pin down a date that best suits everybody.

"It's a big project and we want to ensure minimum disruption, which is why it's taking some time but, naturally, we will share the demolition date with everyone as soon as we have it confirmed."

The Blackburn Meadows Power Station was built between 1937 and 1942. The remaining cooling towers are two of seven cooling towers that once stood on the site.

this was sent to me:

Passed by the towers on wednesday 23/1 and can confirm major prep work is going on, they have bulldozed a large mound of earth around the bases on the side of the viaduct and seem to have dug a pit around the other side while 'weakening' the drop sides.
My guess is that the 2 old dears dont have much time left :(
