-------NEW ALBUM 'OUTLINES' OUT ON 33JAZZ-------------Dividing his time between his native UK and Paris, alto and soprano saxophonist Sam Coombes formed a first group under his own name in 2001 in partnership with pianist Rob Chapman. This joint-led Paris-based quartet did two albums comprised very largely of original compositions, an eponymous self-produced first album in 2002 and 'Static Shock' in 2005, published on the prestigious French ELABETH label. Coombes' more recent and UK-based musical work, in addition to quartet playing, has involved a progression towards both trio and solo saxophone work, and larger ensemble work on the horizon. -- *Selected Press Quotes* -- 'Coombes often demonstrates a real daringness in his solos, and especially on the alto where sparks really fly.' Jazzman -- 'If the technical mastery of this music surprises on first listen, it's also the orginiality of the compositions which makes Static Shock a quality album.' MusiQualité -- 'Coombes is capable of densely-packed soaring phrases and has a real talent for melodic lines which are both dense and intricate.' Jazz Hot -- 'The richness of the background musical knowledge of these young musicians with irreproachable technique is evident. They have managed to incorporate such a variety of feels and tempos, and such a feeling of urgency, that their music deserves careful attention.' Jazz Magazine -- 'This album is a real little gem. It's the sort of recording that you aren't expecting and which really bowls you over. Firstly because we discover an out of the ordinary saxophonist equipped with remarkable technical abilities. When a saxophonist displays such powerful playing , such precision in his attack, such clarity in his phrasing and such assurance we know we are dealing with a (future?) great.'
