The future for Virginia-based indie rock band, Copper Sails, looks very promising. While their new album, ‘Hiding Place,’ is not set for release until the fall of 2008, it has already gotten the attention of major networks, ESPN and MTV. A track from the album was featured on ESPN's Baseball Tonight in July of 2008, and discussions are underway with a popular reality series for a spot later this fall.
‘Hiding Place’ is produced by Ted Comerford, whose work with Zox, Virginia Coalition and Army of Me has made him one of the most sought after, independent producers in the Mid-Atlantic region. It is mixed by the legendary Mitch Easter (REM, Wilco, Pavement) and mastered by the highly accredited Greg Calbi (U2, Interpol, The Strokes). ‘Hiding Place’ successfully walks the line between American indie rock and British rock which is undoubtedly a tribute to the band's influences, which range from British bands such as Radiohead, Doves, and Snow Patrol to American bands such as Rogue Wave, Death Cab for Cutie, and Arcade Fire. By walking this line, Copper Sails offers something new to listeners, who will be grabbed with the immediate accessibility and excitement of tracks like "Hiding Place" and "Still Lost" and kept intrigued by the depth and introspection offered by such tracks as "Orange Peel" and "Morning Comes Too Early.” So far, the response has been extremely positive, and the band is geared up for a big push this fall.
The attention that Copper Sails is receiving is no surprise given their storied success over the past few years, including being contracted as the Bud True Music band for Central Virginia in 2005 & 2006 and opening for national acts such as The Strokes, Switchfoot, Collective Soul, Live, Hootie and the Blowfish, Blue October, Train, The Used, and Blues Traveler. As the band awaits the fall release of 'Hiding Place,’ they continue to tour and work tirelessly to reach new fans and make a dent in the east coast music scene. While the band has sometimes been compared to such acts as U2 and Coldplay, one listen will reveal that they have a sound all their own, defined by dual lead vocals, intricate and expansive guitar work, lush piano and keyboard textures, driving bass, and rhythmic drumming, that forges a new American Indie / British Rock sound.
