Corey Colum is a compelling new voice in Australian music, whose songwriting combines elements of the traditional and modern, and speaks to the everyday experiences of regular people.
Corey was born in 1984 in Bunbury, Western Australia and developed a passion for music from a young age. Bunbury was home to Corey’s school education participating in the choir and guitar lessons after school. Family road trips imparted inspiration from songwriting legend John Williamson and others. At 17, Corey started performing music locally in an acoustic trio. His authentic country music stylings began to attract opportunities beyond Bunbury, including various rodeos and events.
Winning Talent quests at the Coastal Country Music Club in Bunbury and the Collie Country Music Awards provided valuable encouragement for a now emerging music career. With newfound confidence, Corey started to develop his songwriting ability, entering Western Australian Music Industry competitions and receiving promising feedback on his entries.
In 2007 Corey was accepted into the Country Music Association of Australia’s College of Country Music. Embarking on a rigorous course involving all facets of the country music business solidified new goals and aspirations for the future. During his time at college a songwriting project developed material that would become a finalist entry in the regional category in the West Australian Song of the Year Competition.
In September 2008, Corey entered and won the Boyup Brook Heat for the Telstra Road To Tamworth. This saw him on his way to Tamworth for the finals and grand final, where he took home the Songwriter’s Award and also the People’s Choice Award. Since then, Corey has toured with Australian country stars Adam Harvey and The Sunny Cowgirls, and is preparing to bring his homegrown style of country to Nashville when he heads over in June as part of his Telstra Road to Tamworth prize…
