Cornbelt Chorus is the sound of the perpetual motion of fusion, of the incongruities of classic country balladry, electronica and rock propelling itself forward, somehow holding it together under the banner of the Four-Four Beat and charismatic, acoustic-guitar sporting frontman Zach Reasoner. Cornbelt at first glance looks ramshackle, tired as the label 'alt-country': swilling whiskey, admonishing ex-girlfriends onstage, smoking faster and longer than everyone else, and with purpose. But the joke's on the tired audience. Cornbelt Chorus isn't another Ryan Adams clone, shifting genre during some sort of mid-career crisis. Cornbelt doesn't have to worry about what's most real, most pure, like most reactionary alt-country critics. The band succeeds because they write some great, driven pop music, regardless of what you think they're going to sound like. So who's to care what their labeled as? Cornbelt Chorus, then, is a study in tightly controlled contrast, a factory for pop nuggets without a definite name. by Jacob Harper
