  • CORNCROW NEWS DECEMBER 2010

    Hi folks, we hope that you're all (to quote fab Sir Paulie) simply having a wonderful Christmas time. Following the cancellation of our December CD launch party (due to Kim being frozen in her Lostwithiel wyrd ice-bunker ) we've now arranged a proper-job gig in Liskeard's luxurious folk lounge on Wednesday 9th February.
    Admission is £5,  which includes a copy of our Sweet Nightingale CD mini-album. Bargain!
    Admission without the CD is £2. Doors open 20:00

    We really hope that you can come to this one, it's going to be a bit good...

    And... for those of you who really fancied the idea of a seasonal revel, with songs, tunes, eating, drinking, storytelling and ye olde morris daunces, we've already booked the Barley Folk room for Sunday 20th March, which is both the Vernal Equinox and the day before Steve's birthday. Sorted!

    We now have three highly desirable CD-type products in-stock at  Corncrow Retail Village.

    “We Bring You A King With A Head Of Gold” is a double-CD compilation album which features our version of: “The Cutty Wren,” alongside tracks from some of our chums like Mama, Jennifer Crook, Tinkerscuss, Barron Brady and Wyrdstone, and lots more fine artists besides.

    Echoes From The Mountain is a Rif Mountain CD compilation album on which fRoots said that we: “brilliantly turn this (Al) Jones’s The Road To Marazion into a folk anthem based on bodhran and electric harmonica.” Yay us, right?!  It also features some of our absolute heroes and very favourite people, like Wizz Jones, Pamela Wyn Shannon, Jason Steel, Steve Tilston, The Owl Service and Katie Rose. Probably the best, and most intriguing Brit-folk compilation of the year, even if you don’t really like us all that much!

    Finally, of course, there’s our own Sweet Nightingale, which is available in both download and CD format exclusively via Kesson.

    Here’s to a happy new year, and we look forward to seeing you on 9th February.

    Spencer The Rover is from the repertoire of The Copper Family http://www.thecopperfamily.com/ and has been recorded by many great artists including John Martyn, Robin Dransfield and Cara Dillon
    Steve finally got round to learning it during a week-long stay on St Mary's, Scilly in 2009.

    This version of  the ballad: The Two Sisters (AKA "Cruel Sister") is the work of the very wonderful Kate Fletcher. Her web site is here: http://www.ancientmusic.co.uk/ ;

    Kim first heard it in Steve's kitchen - also the venue for the spontaneous recording of Merrily Kissed The Quaker. This fine Irish jig was garnered by the process of Steve practicing the bouzouki by attempting to play along with Planxty albums.

    Our effusive thanks and big respect go to Paul Dye for these recordings!

    All the lovely new photos that now adorn our MySpace profile were taken in the merry month of May by Mr Paul Dye in the vicinity of Folk Towers, Cornwall. Not only does he make us sound good, he also makes us look good. The man is a genius, I tell you.

    All the best - Steve
