Seminal indie band Corndolly formed in 1991 with members Amy (Gossow) Van Ry, Angie Heaton, Rachel Switzky and Wendy O’Neal. Following their debut playing in the basement of Corndolly house for a New Year’s Eve party, the band played their first club date in January 1992, a sold out show at The Blind Pig in Champaign, IL. Local music impresario Geoff Merritt attended the show and immediately asked them to make their first single, Sex Kitten b/w Come Out, on his new MUD record label. Over the next two years Corndolly went on to record two additional now-classic 7" releases, Human Cannon Ball b/w Squirting Banana Dildo & No Song, and After School Special b/w The Difference. The bands’ intense touring and recording schedule included a riot grrrl tour with Bratmobile and Heavens to Betsy (featuring Corrin Tucker, later of Sleater Kinney), and their infamous “Ivy League” tour with dates at the Middle East in Cambridge, MA, as well as performances at Smith College, Princeton and Sarah Lawrence. During their peak, the band also made regular appearances at Lounge Axe in Chicago, performing with such acts as the Coctails, Sebadoh, Liz Phair and Uncle Tupelo.
In 1993, Switzky departed the band to pursue an internship at Cooper Hewitt in New York City, and was replaced by Matt Friedburger. The band broke up later that year, as school, career and other interests began to compete for band member’s attention. In the wake of Amy's departure, Matt, Angie, and Wendy continued playing together as Liquorette. Two years later, MUD released a posthumous compilation Corndolly CD featuring previously unreleased tracks, many of which were recorded by Brad Wood. Angie Heaton has since established herself as a solo artist in the Champaign area, now with four releases to her name, including the recently well-reviewed “Rumor Mill.” Rachel went on to form Sarge with Elizabeth Elmore in 1995, and their 1998 release The Glass Intact made Spin Magazine’s Top 20 list that year. Matt Friedberger played in several bands in the Champaign scene, later achieving his breakthrough after moving to Brooklyn and forming the critically-acclaimed Fiery Furnaces with his sister Eleanor in 2000. Meanwhile, Wendy, who remained in Champaign, and Amy, who moved to Brooklyn, busied themselves with marriage, children, work and the trappings of while daydreaming about a Corndolly reunion. As of late 2007, the founding members of the band are contemplating a reunion in mid-2008, picking up where they left off some 15 years earlier and poising themselves for a comeback amidst an evolving 21st century music scene.
With their live shows and studio work, Corndolly held forth with impressionistic songs laced with humor, tenderness, and rage delivered in a dense, feedback-laden blast furnace of sound. The combination of Switzky's and Heaton's driving rhythms fronted by O'Neal's clever, melodic guitarwork and Gossow's alternately growling and impassioned vocals created a critical mass of sound that both defined and transcended the riot grrrl and grunge styles. Corndolly's recorded work continues to be played worldwide on indie radio and internet broadcasts as a document of a signature period in rock that continues to resonate.
