I remember back when my Father and Family drove through I-190 Downtown Buffalo back as late as the Early 1980's with Bethlehem Steel Refineries and at dusk early in the morning especially when it was still Winter Dark outside you could see the sky and factories light up with flames to the south in Lackawanna. Inside the Car reeked with the odor even weeks after driving through.
The Highways there and in NYS and PA were cracked, giant potholes and chewed up concrete completely in those days everywhere.
Lol, they always blamed former NYS Governor Nelson Rockefeller and Hugh Carey for the mess.
Mario Cuomo in the 1980's was the first Governor that actually fixed up the State Roads dramatically from a War Zone to massive New Paved Roads all over.
My favorite part of the NY Thruway is not the 70 Mile section from I-190 Buffalo Interchange to Pennsylvania Stateline but the 426 Mile section from I-190 Buffalo Interchange to the New York Cityline.
I recommend anyone travelling from Buffalo,Western NYS and Canada going to NYC to take that route both to NYC and return at least once.
In July or August ,the best Upstate Day Route I recommend from Buffalo or Canada is taking I-190 to I-90 take Route 5 Cheektowaga Interchange Exit to Route 20 then to Route 20B to Rote 63 and Silver Springs. Stop at Letchworth State Park for Lunch Picnic and Genesee Falls viewing. Then head to I-390 Interchange at Dansville and stop in Corning to visit the Museum of Glass [Formerly the Corning Glass Center when I last visited there]. After take I-86 [formerly Route 17] through Elmira and East to Binghamton. Stop at a McDonald's off I-86 there. Then take Route 11 North to I-81 to Cortland Interchange Exit up to Route 20 and Skaneateles. View Skaneateles Lake and take Route 20 through Auburn,Geneva and take the NY Thruway Exit there b
