Indianapolis’ Nuvo Magazine once described Cory Hill’s live performance by saying “Though only 21, he sings with a voice beyond his years”. It’s Hill’s dynamic singing, often low toned and weaving intimate stories and other times wailing and screaming, along with his songwriting and guitar playing that make the live performances something you don’t want to miss. His solo acoustic performances can be an intimate listening experience or an energy packed show with impressive guitar improvisation. The band, whichever form it may be in, is another experience altogether. Imagine mixing The National, Ryan Adams, Johnny Cash, and Death Cab for Cutie into one band and you might have an idea.
Hill’s voice and music have been captivating listeners at live shows for the past 3 years around Indianapolis and East Central Indiana. He’s gained a large following in the area through continuous shows, both as a solo acoustic act and with his band. His debut album, Funny White Room, was one of only two albums by independent artists voted in the top ten albums of 2007 list by east central Indiana’s arts and entertainment publication, All Access. His success on a local level has recently gotten him the opportunity to play shows with some major label and bigger name artists. He played the side stage for the Eric Clapton concert at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Noblesville, IN in May 2008 and had the chance to open for Dispatch lead singer Pete Francis earlier in the year.
Hill has recently made the move to Chicago to explore the larger music scene and to try to further his musical career. He has some new tracks out that are going in a somewhat different direction from his first album. When asked about the change, Cory said, “I went through a big alt country phase there for a while. Most of my first album is sort of a Wilco, Whiskeytown, Uncle Tupelo, type of thing. I still love that genre as well, but I was into rock and acoustic singer/songwriter stuff before that. My newer stuff is more on the rock side of things.”
