Cottonbelly is the pseudonym of Stuart Matthewman.
Born in Hull, England, Stuart moved to London in the early 80s where he met his long time music partner Sade. As a band, with Paul Denman and Andrew Hale they have released 7 albums and 2 live DVDs. Under the name SWEETBACK, Stuart, Paul and Andrew have also released 2 CDs. Sweetback features the guest vocalists: Aya, Chocolate Genius, Amel Larieux, Bahamadia, Leroy Osborne and Maxwell.
Stuart met Maxwell in the early 90s. Together they have produced and written on all his cds. Hold your breath for a new Maxwell album sometime in 2008.....
When he isn’t producing and writing with other artists Stuart uses his a/k/a COTTONBELLY to release his own Dub/Electronic influenced productions and remixes. As Cottonbelly he has worked for an eclectic mix of artists including: Janet Jackson, Gregory Isaacs, Esthero and The Isley Brothers…. the full length CD ‘X Amounts Of Niceness’ was released on Wrong Records in 2004.
Stuarts other musical passion is composing Film Scores. He has scored all the Polish Brothers movies: ‘Twin Falls Idaho’, ‘Jackpot’, ‘Northfork’ and ‘Astronaut Farmer’ the starring featuring Billy Bob Thornton and Virginia Madsen .The movie is released on DVD i and the CD of the music is available from Amazon or iTunes. He also composed the score for the Nelson George movie ‘Life Support’ Featuring an amazing performance by Queen Latifah who won an Emmy for best actress. Having finished the music score for the new Polish Brothers movie 'Manure' He is now back in the Studio with Sade and the rest of the band....... . Stu, I love the Cottonbelly stuff, and I can play it till the cows come home.... BUT..... can we PLEASE have a new Sade disc. It's like I've been going through 9 years of SEVERE withdrawals. LOL
